we ordered a chauvet mega strobe III. We figured it 750w wasn't enough we could always buy another later. But those are huge, so i'm hoping it will end our search

we play in some small places, so we were going to start out with 4. we had 2 that were half the size of the chauvets and lit up a room okay. so i'm hoping 4 will do us for now unless i run across a sweet deal on ebay. Thanks for the reply!

I would think the led strobes would be more durable as opposed to glass bulbs and maybe even last longer, but what it all comes down to is the flash. which one is brightest?

Also, as far as actual brightness, there are LED strobes that can compete with low to mid wattage strobes. However, the capacitor discharge effect even at these low end strobes makes a strobe tube have more of a "pop" than an LED strobe because of the way the capacitor discharges - it's a more powerful type of response.

The minis are really only good for random strobing, not synced strobing. Sorry that I didn't mention that, it's how I use them - in large numbers pointing straight out for random effects.

Well, the minis were a bit weaker than i'd hoped for. i ordered four and had them paired up on each side of our set. you couldn't really tell they were on. also didn't synch up at all. So now we're going to need something for a bigger venue. probably two big strobes. i've noticed on most of the bigger ones they have a line in jack to synch with a seperate controller. can anyone spare me a site to teach me how to set this up right? I really want this to be the last time we have to order anything lights related so i wan't to get everything right. so all help is greatly appreciated

Watch for them on Ebay and you can get them on the cheap. I got mine for 15.00 and I use 8 american DJ snap shots with it contrlled by DMX!

my band is looking for some strobes to replace our beaten down yardsale strobes that have died out. We don't have a complicated lighting rig, it's just flood lights and strobes, very simple.

There was one of these bad boys in the corner by the guitarist. The flashes were even but the low frame rate of the camera dropped a bunch of the flashes. The light is pretty bright and has a built in fan to cool it. All in all, everyone was happy with the light. Buuuutttt we'll probably wind up getting another one just for fun.

That being said, which strobe is better? I've seen these led strobes but how do they hold up to the old fashioned strobe lights? they still sell the equivalents on ebay, but are there advantages to either one?

Durability and long-term cost wise, LEDs win out. HOWEVER, LEDs still cannot compete with the capacitor discharge of a flash tube - there's something very different about a strobe tube firing. I will keep my traditional strobes to the very end (just like I will keep my halogen blinders) because LEDs just can't match it.
