Did you know that there are approximately 20 roundabouts operating on the state highway system and over 300 roundabouts on local roads throughout Florida? For many motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, roundabouts are still a new concept. This page exists to provide you with a variety of information about roundabouts you can share, including newsletter articles, handouts, videos, suggested social media content, and graphics.

EHAP (Electrical Hazards Awareness Program) is designed to provide workers with convenient, online training to recognize electrical hazards.

Similar to an intersection, a motorist should decide which direction he or she wants to go in before approaching the roundabout. Always pay attention to the upcoming signage to understand which lane to take to reach your exit.

If an emergency vehicle approaches, the driver should drive through the roundabout before pulling over, as they would if they were crossing an intersection during that situation.

Cyclists have the choice of using a roundabout as a motorist would or by using it as a pedestrian would. If a cyclist chooses to ride with the vehicle traffic, they must follow the same rules as vehicles follow and signal which direction they will go, just as a vehicle would. If a cyclist chooses to use a walkway, they should yield right-of-way to pedestrians. Cyclists should also walk their bicycles at crosswalks.

El curso combina el aprendizaje en línea con demostraciones de habilidades en el sitio de trabajo. Al completar con éxito el programa, recibirá un certificado que demuestre su capacidad para aprender y retener valiosos conocimientos de la industria.

EHAP must be used in combination with documented on-the-job skills training and verification to meet OSHA 1910.269 requirements.

Storm Cleanup EHAP is often required by the US Army Corps of Engineers in order to qualify for storm-related clean-ups. They have recognized the importance of the EHAP training program dating back to Hurricane Katrina.

Roundabout rules

Before entering the roundabout, drivers should slow to about 10 to 15 mph and yield to any pedestrians or cyclists attempting to cross in crosswalks. Also before entering, drivers should yield to traffic within the roundabout. Once there is a gap in traffic, the driver can enter the roundabout.

While driving through the roundabout, the driver should stay in their lane and then exit at the street they want to go on.

As motorists move through the roundabout in the same direction, the chance of a potential head-on collision is greatly reduced. In fact, roundabouts have been shown to reduce the number of fatal and severe injury crashes by 78 percent to 82 percent compared to a stop-controlled intersection or a signalized intersection, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Pedestrians should stay on the walkways and only cross at designated crosswalks. If needed, the pedestrian can stop in the middle of the crosswalk at the splitter island. Pedestrians have the right-of-way.

Electricity is a serious and widespread hazard to arborists. Electricity causes about 15 percent of all fatalities in the tree care industry, making it the leading cause of worker fatalities.

Roundabouts also keep traffic moving, as opposed to intersections, which force drivers and pedestrians to wait at stoplights or to wait at stop signs for vehicles to cross.

Since even a street lamp circuit or phone line can be energized with enough voltage to kill, almost all arborists in the field have at least some exposure to this hazard. Workers don’t even have to touch a wire to be electrocuted – about half of all electrocution fatalities result from indirect contact. Tree branches and other conductive objects are an ever-present threat to the industry.

Policy for TCIA events during and after the COVID-19 outbreak: TCIA will be following all local safety guidelines and protocols for our upcoming scheduled events. Protocols will be determined using criteria from the CDC, the National Government, and Local Governments. If an event is to be canceled, it will be done one month prior to the event. This policy is subject to change as any new information is gathered by TCIA.

The course blends online learning with on-the-job skills demonstrations. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a certificate demonstrating your ability to learn and retain valuable industry knowledge.

All arborists must be trained to recognize and avoid these electrical hazards.  Qualified line-clearance arborists must know more about electrical hazards and the special techniques used to safely work near electrical conductors.

ANSI Safety Requirements The ANSI Z133.1 safety standard for arboricultural operations requires all employees be trained to recognize electrical hazards. EHAP training meets the ANSI Z133.1 training requirement. All the content related to electrical hazards in the Z133 is included in the EHAP course.) The ANSI Z 133 Safety Standard is available for purchase separately.
