When an engineer works on gas pipe which is being cut into or removed from service, first of all, they must be ‘purged’. A purge is carried out in order to remove the hazardous gas from the line. This is done by injecting an inert gas into the pipe.  The inert gas mixes with the gas in the pipework. This stops the hazard of a combustible mixture which could cause harm to workers on the site.

Purging is often linked to testing but not always. Purging is also undertaken during the commissioning stage. For example, purging is done on new pipework AFTER the pipework has successfully passed the tightness test. It needs to be safely purged following the procedures laid out in IGE/UP/1 (or1A). This is a critical procedure. It is imperative that an explosive mixture of gas and air is not left within the pipework
