One interesting side note on this topic is all the use of AI to extract value from an antiquated economy. My favorite is all the SEO hackers who are using AI to generate very mediocre content to squeeze a few more bucks out of a search engine-based economy that will gradually wane. (More on that some time…) Consider this: we don’t yet understand the principles of this economy that will allow us to survive or even thrive in it.

In short, Snowflake’s rise was due in part to Amazon’s indifference to what would seem like the embarrassing annihilation of Redshift. It turns out that AWS reps couldn’t care less whether their customers’ AWS marketplace bills were pointed at Redshift (on AWS cloud) or Snowflake (on AWS cloud).  AWS is just selling compute at the end of the day. Snowflake just sells it faster to customers who are happier about it.

There has always been a tradeoff between speed and safety, cost and quality, authority and trust. The value we place on these tradeoffs will determine the value of AI applications.

This is one of the best articles I've read yet on AI. Meaningful examples throughout. Well done. Looking forward to the whitepaper: How will the cost and use of these tokens benefit or disadvantage each of the members of our global society? I already had GPT and Gemini write the abstract:

Thank you, Trevor, for this insight! AI is at the bottom of the knowledge pyramid now, so it's difficult to recognize profitable cases at the top of the pyramid. #PROFITomix

Tokens, like vCPUs, are poised to disrupt the SaaS value chain. They transform processing power into labor hours and the hours upon hours it takes to learn information and earn expertise. The products of AI will profit based on the incremental value they create per token.

If working in the data industry has taught me anything, it’s all about compute. If you want the long version of this statement, I offer Lars Kamp’s "inside baseball" article: Why we sold intermix.io to private equity in a shifting market .

Since actually making the thing is no longer the barrier to creating the thing, it will allow humanity's creativity to flourish. (for better or worse ...) We can now (again) create things faster and cheaper than ever. We will have more choices, and therefore, the value of the idea will gain more ground on the value of execution.

Unlike Google’s dramatic shift in access to information, where humans had unbounded access to information — but still had the job of parsing, synthesizing, reformatting, and innovating on the information — most of this work can now be delegated to a machine for a fraction of the price.

Where to? Where to?

About a year ago, OpenAI put up a simple webpage that would quietly come to symbolize how our economy will operate for at least the near future. The page does one thing: it allows users “to understand how a piece of text might be tokenized by a language model and the total count of tokens in that piece of text.”

We ask data analysts to “summarize the trends in these 7594 customer survey responses,” and the poor individual has to scan and iterate for hours to find an answer that feels both valid and plausible.

If I had a dollar for every time somebody said to me, “Have you ever heard of ___.ai?” I’d be rich. It’s coming, and it’s coming fast. You no longer have to ask your trainer friend for a workout. You can get a pretty ok one for free.

As you might know, I made a PoC app that uses OpenAI for the entirety of its backend to produce customized workout plans: emom.club . It’s not great, but it does prove a few concepts:

Anything of value that can be made more cheaply using AI, will be made more cheaply with AI. The value of creativity will be greater than the value of productivity. The value of these AI-replaced things will be subjected to very tangible tradeoffs.

I’ve gone on way too long, but I want to leave you with a question for consideration. There is no doubt that value and wealth will shift. How will the cost and use of these tokens benefit or disadvantage each of the members of our global society?

The point is that by and large, the value of every “Service” in Software-as-a-Service is judged by the incremental value it produces on top of the compute it consumes. The entire SaaS industry is just stacks and compilations of services packaged with some core IP to create another slice of incremental value. It’s true all the way down to AWS, Google, Microsoft, and the new prince, Nvidia.

Right now, GPT-4 Turbo costs $0.00001 to input and $0.00003 to output. That’s the cost of what is currently OpenAI’s most advanced (and most expensive) model. They also offer less costly models based on factors like speed, context window, “accuracy,” and the recency of training information.

Understanding the proteome of humans is essential to the understanding of human biology and disease. Mass spectrometry allows for the detailed analysis of protein mass and protein composition through a number of approaches. Capabilities include:

Let’s consider data analytics. Looker on top of BigQuery costs more for the same amount of compute than on BigQuery alone which is more expensive than Postgres on Google Cloud SQL, which costs more than hosting your own Postgres database on Google Compute Engine.  (Please allow me to handwave the usage details!)

Now, if I want a tutor to translate the philosophy of Hume to me in plain English, it will cost me about $0.01 for 500 sentences. Let’s leave the discussion of accuracy for later, but that is a great deal.

My take on this is that we will need to think discretely about knowledge and work. Like the separation of storage and compute, we’ll need to change our perspective on each to understand the value of their sum.

And the cost, and therefore the value of work, has plummeted. Value will be consolidated in the ability to manage work, like managing knowledge.

I had the idea for this app during the pandemic when group workouts were axed. The idea remained in my head because I was too busy trying to figure out how to be a parent and a human during a pandemic. I made the first version of it in an afternoon a few weeks ago.

Everyone with a smart device will have access to versions of all AI-generated products. Just like anything, there will be premiums for speed, safety, quality, trust, and more.

You’ve probably recognized, by this point, that I’m not a Ph.D. in economics. But I’ve looked around enough to recognize that one unit of anything is more valuable to some people, in some situations than others: a minute, a virtual centralized processing unit hour, a kilowatt hour, a square foot, a keystroke, or a word. Or a token.

A thin layer of knowledge is now a commodity. The ability to interpret, exchange, translate, and validate knowledge will still hold value.

Also, the value of new knowledge will be much greater than the value of well-documented and commonly accepted knowledge. The value of innovation is not going anywhere.
