What makes a high-speed camera a high-speed camera (continued) Digital consumer, prosumer DSLR and machine vision cameras continue to get faster and can achieve frame rates at several hundred frames per second in some cases. Often their sensitivity is a little low for the task and so they require a lot of light, nonetheless they could be described as a high-speed camera. We however define high-speed cameras as those designed specifically for capturing images at high rates and will typically use 1000fps as the entry level for a high-speed camera when capturing at full resolution. We also categorise a slow motion camera into two categories: either with on-board memory storage or that transmits image output data as it is captured in real time via a cable interface. The latter is called a streaming high-speed camera. Steaming high-speed cameras are limited by the cable bandwidth they transmit with and so are typically not as fast as high-speed cameras with memory storage, however their ability to transit images in real time to a fast data storage and processing computer allows them to capture at high speed for relatively long periods of times and to process the data in real time to produce low latency results. A high-speed camera with storage can capture perhaps a few seconds of data whereas streaming high-speed cameras can capture minutes or tens of minutes. How to identify a good high-speed camera Frame Rate The main feature of a slow motion camera is its ability to capture images at high frame rates. A good slow motion camera does so and produces clean, low noise, bright, high dynamic range images, without any artificial software enhancement designed to make an image more pleasing to the eye. Some high-speed cameras rely on artificially boosting parts of the tonal curve to make it more visually appealing but in fact add no precision and sometimes actually detract from it. Exposure Time With high frame rates comes short exposure times. The exposure cannot be longer than the frame period. Sometimes exposure times need to be even shorter than the frame period in order to freeze very fast motion to avoid motion blur. Some slow motion cameras have exposure times in nano-seconds and at these short exposures very little light is captured buy the sensor. Short exposure times mean less time for the sensor to collect light. Sensitivity Short exposure times and very little light requires a high-speed camera to have high sensitivity. This is typically achieved with a high Quantum Efficiency (good at converting light photons to electrons) and large pixels to collect more light. But sensitivity also needs to be coupled with low noise. A high sensitivity high-speed camera will only produce usable data if it’s not buried in the noise. Sensitivity defines what can be detected at the lowest light levels but any signal detected much be stronger than the noise level for it to be measured. A fairly recent advancement in high-speed cameras are those with backside illuminated sensors (BSI) are designed with the wiring metal contacts to connect to the sensor pushed to the back of the sensor. By moving the circuitry out of the way BSI sensors have a fill-factor close to 100% and so collect almost all photons striking the pixel. Data Storage When recording at high frame rates, slow-motion cameras produce huge amounts of data in a short time and so those with on-board storage need a lot of memory. High speed events are often unpredictable. Slow motion cameras with larger data storage capability minimise the likelihood of missing an event. Application Capabilities Adept Turnkey’s range of high-speed cameras are suited to a wide range of industries including Academia, Automotive, Defence, Aerospace, Industrial, Science Research and in applications include Combustion, Microfluidics, Transparent Flows, Cytometry single cell imaging, Particle Image Velocimetry, Ballistics and Range, Blast waves, Fire Research, Materials analysis and many more………….

What makes a high-speed camera a high-speed camera. The common thread between high-speed cameras is there ability to capture images at a very high rate with very short exposures that freeze motion blur and with enough sensitivity to produce clear, sharp and bright images with a little light as possible. The terminology of high-speed camera and slow motion camera is interchangeable and typically we regard slow motion cameras to be those with frame rates of hundreds of images per second to millions of images per second at full resolution.
