Pupil magnification is the ratio of exit pupil diameter to entrance pupil diameter: p = P'D / PD Note that pupil magnification can be less than one. Values tend to be less than 1 at longer focal lengths and greater than 1 at short focal lengths. Because of geometry (similar triangles) effective f-number is normally stated in terms of pupil magnification rather than Numerical Aperture. Pupil magnification and effective f-number are normally only important in close-up photography.

Knight Optical's Fresnel lenses are one of our most popular products. Our stock catalogue consists of standard Fresnel lenses with focal lengths from 3 mm to 650 nm, reverse configuration Fresnel lenses which are ideal for solar concentration applications, cylindrical Fresnel, and lenticular Fresnel lenses. Custom Fresnel lenses are also available with dimensions to 1000 mm or more.

Strictly speaking this the real definition of f-number whereas f / PD is a close approximation. So, effective f-number and Numerical Aperture are closely related.

Mathematically the entrance and exit pupils are conjugates. In practical terms this simply means that all the light gathered by the entrance pupil is delivered to the exit pupil.

Shanghai Optics offers Fresnel lenses Fresnel lenses made of plastics for various applications – including custom versions tailored to your needs.

Numerical aperture

Many readers are aware that the diameter of the entrance pupil relates to the f-number (f#) of the lens. The formula is: PD = f / f# or f# = f / PD where PD is the entrance pupil diameter, f is the focal length, and f# is the f-number. This is an object space, light gathering property.

Here's another look at the 50mm lens with cardinal points and the pupils: For this lens the pupil magnification is close to 1.5 Note that P' is 1.5 times are far away from F' as H' and note that P is 1/1.5 times as far away from F as H.

Fresnel lenses are lenses composed of a series of concentric rings. The Fresnel lens construction design allows for large aperture and short focal length with less mass and volume compared with a conventional lens design.

Some aspects to consider before buying Fresnel lenses: dimensions, focal length, focusing efficiency, stray light, compatibility with systems, ease of installation, durability, reliability, maintenance needs, device packaging and mounting, environmental robustness, cleaning options.

Anyone, not only suppliers themselves, can report additional suppliers. If possible, please provide a web address showing that this supplier indeed offers such products.

In any case, we can use the entrance pupil diameter from our ray tracing to calculate f-number at infinity and the exit pupil diameter at other than infinity to calculate NA and effective f-number. (Because the lens specifications don't state an aperture diameter I actually tune the aperture diameter to meet the specification at infinity.)

Finally, for now, the entrance pupil is the center of perspective. To accomplish multi-image panoramic photographic, particularly at short distances, you must rotate the lens around the entrance pupil to maintain perspective. (Ignoring the nuance that entrance pupil, especially for wide angle lenses, moves with viewing angle!)

An already registered supplier can use a customized form to report the full list of offered photonics products. That form is reachable with a link at the bottom of the supplier's profile page.

16 suppliers for Fresnel lenses are listed in the RP Photonics Buyer's Guide, out of which 3 present their product descriptions. Both manufacturers and distributors can be registered.

Users: if any displayed information is incorrect (e.g., a listed supplier does not offer such products) or legally problematic, please notify RP Photonics so that the problem can be solved.

In image space the half-angle the exit pupil makes with the image plane determines Numerical Aperture (NA). The formula is: NA = sin q where NA is Numerical Aperture and q is the half-angle.

Suppliers: you can report modified data using a form, which is provided via the button "Edit profile data" on your company profile page. You can obtain our advertising package for getting a much improved visibility and many more leads. (Tell your marketing people about it!)

Fresnel lenses are thin lenses with a large entrance area, designed to focus light through a series of concentric grooves. Despite their limited imaging quality, they are useful in various applications, particularly in illumination systems where compact and efficient light focusing is needed.
