Polychromatisches Licht besteht aus vielen Wellenlängen, monochromatisches Licht nur aus theoretisch einer einzigen Wellenlänge.

Polychromatisches Licht ist Licht (sichtbar und unsichtbar), das aus vielen verschiedenen Wellenlängen besteht. Beispielsweise ist das weiße Licht einer Halogenlichtquelle polychromatisch und enthält alle Wellenlängen zwischen ca. 360 bis 2500 nm. Auch das Licht von Weißlicht-LEDs und von lasergepumpten Plasmalichtquellen ist polychromatisch. Aus polychromatischem Licht kann in einem Monochromator monochromatisches Licht, also Licht mit nur einer Wellenlänge, isoliert werden.
