With buffer shadows, increasing those samples and such make the shadows creep closer to the underneath, within limits…then you have to crank in a spot or close small area light to give definition. Right now it looks like, for real purposes, a 6 foot diffuser umbrella on a 300w halogen. If that’s the look you are happy with, great! otherwise, keep playing. I spent 4 hours lighting a stupid glass sign in a foyer once…but I got the shot I wanted. But I about went CRAZY messing with my lights.

PapaSmurf, Thanks for the buffered shadow suggestion. I had messed around with it a bit but it looked horrible. Seems I had the Bias too high and it looked more like an X-ray of the logo than its shadow. The wiki link really helped…

I agree with the others. For the most natural shadows I would try Yafray, Indigo or maybe even Kerkythea. Try Yafray first, since it’s basically part of Blender and would be the easiest to setup.
