“We have the Taser 7 currently, and the service of the life and warranty is coming up,” said Darrell Kriplean, the president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. “Time and distance is our friend in having to deal with someone who is armed with some sort of weapon.”

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Police Department is one step closer to getting an upgraded version of its non-Lethal Taser stun guns, which officers say are safer and more effective than current models being used.

“So if somebody is running, running, at you, running around, there are all kinds of abilities for the Taser to miss and once you miss, you can’t put it in and fire again,” he said.

Right now, the proposal is going through the internal process with the intent to have it on the Dec. 18 Phoenix City Council agenda.

“What about options of deescalation of force, so you don’t even have to pull the Taser? That is a matter of training that can be done and that is beneficial for everybody,” McWhirter said.

“Well, if it comes to a choice between using a gun and using a Taser, that is perfectly reasonable. We want the police to choose the least lethal option. But it doesn’t get to the problem of violation of due process,” said McWhirter.

“The bigger issue is they are not attending to the underlying problem so that’s why there is the criticism,” said constitutional law expert Robert McWhirter.

Earlier this year, Department of Justice investigators reported that the Phoenix Police Department’s use of stun guns was unreasonable.
