Kohärenz (lat. cohaerentia; Zusammenhang). Der Zusammenhang oder die inhaltliche Zusammengehörigkeit von Einheiten eines gesprochenen oder geschriebenen Textes; die inhaltliche (semantisch-logische) Organisation eines Textes. Kohärenz ist nicht nur als eine Eigenschaft von Texten zu betrachten, sondern auch als Ergebnis kognitiver (konstruktiver) Prozesse des Hörers/Lesers. Kohärenz ist das Ergebnis von Bedeutungsaktualisierung; ihr zugrunde liegt eine Sinnkontinuität von Vorstellungen und Wissen als Gefüge von Begriffen und Beziehungen von Begriffen im Sinne eines gespeicherten semantischen Netzwerks, das im Text oft formal nicht zum Ausdruck gelangt (vgl. ->Kohäsion); der Hörer/Leser konstruiert den notwendigen Zusammenhang (vgl. ->Inferenz).

Kohärenzbildung wird determiniert bzw. angeregt durch explizite Kohäsion von Texten, aber auch durch semantisch-logische Beziehungen, wie Gegensatz und Inklusion, durch raumzeitliche Kontiguität und kausale Zusammenhänge, durch thematische Information u.a. Nach Kintsch (1982) ist es bei der Kohärenzbildung prinzipiell möglich, daß der objektiv-physikalische Reiz (Lichtwellen, Schallwellen) für das sprachrezipierende Subjekt, z.T. bedingt durch selektive Wahrnehmung, in transformierter Weise funktional wird. Der subjektiv wirksame Reiz ist das komplexe Ergebnis externer Determination und subjektiver Transformation. Das Ergebnis kann (induktiv-)probabilistisch sein; es kann aber auch durch zuviel Gedächtnismaterial verzerrt erscheinen (vgl. ->kognitive Psychologie, Inferenz, Langzeitgedächtnis).

Kohärenz kann betrachtet werden als a) sprachliche Voraussetzung für das Verstehen aufgrund von Kohäsion, b) Eigenschaft referentieller Sachverhaltszusammenhänge, c) Eigenschaft des sozial-kommunikativen Rahmens, d) Prozeß und Resultat kreativer, konstruktiver Rezeption (van de Velde 1981). Kohärenzbildung ist (im Zusammenhang mit Inferenz) auch möglich bei nicht-kohäsiven Texten mit Anakoluthen, Ellipsen, ungrammatischen Ausdrücken usw. Sinn kann beigelegt werden durch Konstruktion eines geeigneten Referenzrahmens aufgrund von durch Erfahrung erworbener kognitiver Rahmen oder Schemata. Dabei zeigt sich, daß sprachliche Kompetenz nur eine Bedingung für die Konstruktion von Kohärenz und Verstehen ist.
