The letter, written by two doctors at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, appears to be the first medically documented case of ventricular fibrillation caused by a Taser gun. Tasers are pistol-like weapons that fire electrified barbs up to 25 feet, immobilizing people with painful shocks.

A 35-year-old man who was shocked with a Taser stun gun while in a holding cell in a Queens police station early yesterday died a short time later, the police said. The police defended the use of the stun gun, saying that the man, a multiple offender who had been arrested on drug charges, might have ingested crack cocaine before his arrest and that he had become ill in his cell. When medical personnel were called to help him, he became unruly and combative, the police said, and officers used the gun to subdue him.
