Law enforcement agencies in Haywood County have been looking for solutions to the utility belt conundrum, from suspenders to take some of the load off the hips to equipment vests.

Utility belts run about $70 to $80. Officers can customize the position of their equipment on the belt, with the tools they need quicker access to toward the front and their gun on their dominant side.

Gilliland went down an inventory of what the officers carry on them in general — two pairs of handcuffs, a firearm and extra magazines for it, a taser, pepper spray and a tourniquet.

Now, with many officers working out more and slimming down, thanks in part to incentives for officers to keep a healthier lifestyle, there’s less room on the belts.

“If you’ve never put on a belt like that, you need to experience it. This two-and-a-half inch thick leather belt, it’s not flexible,” said Canton Police Chief Scott Sluder. “It’s caused officers to have back and hip problems. Some of them have to retire early because of that.”

Far from the old days of carrying a gun and handcuffs, law enforcement officers have added a growing arsenal of equipment to their utility belts over the years.

As one of the most cited density gradient sperm separation media, ISolate is the media of choice for laboratories worldwide to produce clean, robust samples with optimal recovery rates. It is supplied ready-to-use as a dual density gradient solution to process the wide variety of semen samples encountered in the laboratory. The kit, which consists of a 50% upper layer and 90% lower layer, support use with a two layer protocol for healthy samples or with a single layer protocol that enables separation of motile sperm from low quality semen samples. ISolate effectively removes cellular contaminants (dead sperm, white cells, and miscellaneous debris) to yield a sample that contains predominantly progressive, motile sperm, capable of fertilizing the oocyte for IUI, IVF and ICSI.

The Canton police department experimented with adding suspenders, but several officers, including Sluder himself, weren’t fans of that solution.

The sheer weight isn’t the only issue, but the bulk of the belts create pressure points for patrol officers spending long stints in the driver’s seat.

Along with getting heavier, belts have grown more crowded. Some officers, especially slimmer ones, have a challenge fitting everything.

Officers have to know their utility belt like the back of their hand, so they can swiftly grab the right tactical gear without taking their eyes off a suspect.

Sperm separation kit designed to quickly produce clean samples, with high concentrations of progressive motile sperm from both healthy and low quality semen.

“Suspenders have reduced the day-to-day wear of duty belts simply by spreading the load across the upper body,” said newly-elected Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke.

“We have reduced what’s on our belts,” said Maggie Valley Police Chief Russ Gilliland. “We’ve moved some of the things up to a vest, so the guys can distribute the weight of the equipment a little better. It helps ease the stress on their backs and hips. It helps for comfort and wellness for the officer.”

“If you have less of a waistline, you can’t carry as many things on your belt,” said Waynesville Assistant Police Chief Brandon Gilmore.

A case study conducted by Dr. Mehta, Lab Director at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, UK, showed a 10% increase in pregnancy rate using ISolate and Multipurpose Handling Medium compared to leading competitor's media.

Instead, they carry a gadget called a BolaWrap, which shoots out a cord that wraps around a suspect to restrain them. Gilmore said BolaWraps serve as a de-escalation tool without the potential repercussions of a stun gun.

The Canton police department is also looking at adding vests sometime this year, but are still exploring the different styles.

Wilke said there were also changes to how the belts were made — recently, nylon has been used as a way to widen the belt, which adds support. And some deputies have used vests to help with the heavy loads.

One new gadget that hasn’t found a home on utility belts are cell phones. Most officers carry their cell phones in their pockets or leave them in their cars to avoid the risk of breaking in the event of an incident.

“We’re picky about what type of vest we’d have,” Sluder said. “We want to maintain a professional look. We want the outer vest to still look like a uniform shirt.”
