You don’t need to fear stun guns either. The electricity from a stun gun cannot kill you. It will definitely hurt, but it’s not lethal. Even the ones that claim to be millions of volts won't kill you. It's the amperage, not the voltage that can kill you and stun guns use less than 5 milliamps.

Middle English stoppen, from Old English -stoppian, from Vulgar Latin *stuppare to stop with tow, from Latin stuppa tow, from Greek styppē

The type of stun gun you purchase is only limited to how much you’re willing to spend. You can get an effective stun gun online for as little as $15. The range of prices are usually determined by the features offered. Features like a flashlight (for walking your dog or being outside at night), disabling switch (in case the stun gun is snatched from your hand), and/or rechargeable batteries (so your device will always be fully charged) all come into play.

Some stun guns are designed specifically for women. Along with the regular features, stun guns have assorted designs and colors. The devices are also usually smaller to accommodate the hands of most women. Other varieties of stun guns come disguised in objects such as umbrellas, mobile phones, or pens. A stun belt is a belt that is fastened around the subject's waist, leg, or arm that carries a battery and control pack, and contains features to stop the subject from unfastening or removing it. A remote-control signal is sent to tell the control pack to give the subject an electric shock. Some models are activated by the subject's movement. Stun shields are shields with electrodes embedded into the face, originally marketed for animal control, that have been adopted for riot control.

The current may also be generated with a pulse frequency that mimics the body's own electrical signals. Here, the current will tell the attacker's muscles to do a great deal of work in a short amount of time. But the signal doesn't direct the work toward any particular movement. The work does nothing but deplete the attacker's energy reserves, leaving him too weak to move.

The charge combines with the electrical signals from the attacker's brain. This is like running an outside current into a phone line: The original signal is mixed in with random noise, making it very difficult to decipher any messages. When these lines of communication go down, the attacker has a very hard time telling his muscles to move, and he may become confused and unbalanced. He is partially paralyzed, temporarily.

Most stun-gun models have two pairs of electrodes: an inner pair and an outer pair. The outer pair—the charge electrodes—are spaced a good distance apart, so current will only flow if you insert an outside conductor. If the current can't flow across these electrodes, it flows to the inner pair: the test electrodes. These electrodes are close enough that the electric current can leap between them. The moving current ionizes the air particles in the gap, producing a visible spark and crackling noise.

Since the 90s when TASER made its first big splash as a new addition to the law enforcement utility belt, stun guns have only grown in popularity. Few non-lethal self-defense devices are as effective or reliable. Despite how stun gun sales have only risen in the past 20 years, there’s still a lot of confusion about how stun guns work, where to buy them, and even the difference between a stun gun and a TASER.

This display is mainly intended as a deterrent: an attacker sees and hears the electricity and knows you're armed. The shock can stun and perhaps even incapacitate the target briefly. Since it has a fairly high voltage, the charge will pass through heavy clothing and skin. But at around 3 milliamps, the charge is not intense enough to damage the attacker's body unless it is applied for extended periods of time.

stop, cease, quit, discontinue, desist mean to suspend or cause to suspend activity. stop applies to action or progress or to what is operating or progressing and may imply suddenness or definiteness. stopped at the red light cease applies to states, conditions, or existence and may add a suggestion of gradualness and a degree of finality. by nightfall the fighting had ceased quit may stress either finality or abruptness in stopping or ceasing. the engine faltered, sputtered, then quit altogether discontinue applies to the stopping of an accustomed activity or practice. we have discontinued the manufacture of that item desist implies forbearance or restraint as a motive for stopping or ceasing. desisted from further efforts to persuade them

At its most basic, this is all there is to incapacitating a person with a stun gun: you apply electricity to a person's muscles and nerves. And since there are muscles and nerves all over the body, it doesn't particularly matter where you hit an attacker. If you use the gun for half a second, a painful jolt will startle the attacker. If you zap him for one or two seconds, he should experience muscle spasms and become dazed. And if you zap him for over three seconds, he will become unbalanced, disoriented, and may lose muscle control.

The first stun gun was a stun glove and used an electric current that ran up a tube into a glove. This device was originally invented in the 1930s but never really caught on. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the stun gun really got rolling when the TASER device was invented. It was actually intended for an air safety device that marshals could use to subdue a criminal mid-flight. Since then, the TASER device has become one of the most popular self-defense items in the world, simply because it is non-lethal, effective, affordable, and easy to use.

Look for a device that boasts anything above 3 milliamps and you’ll get all the power you need. If you’re in the market for high-quality ranged devices, check out our selection of TASER products. They’re more expensive than your average stun gun, but they don’t hold back when it comes to power.

When you’re looking for the strongest stun device, many brands advertise voltage, but amperage is what counts. The larger the diameter of the stun area, the more power the device can transfer. While mini stun guns pack quite the punch, the larger the unit, the more pain they can deal.

Even devices with a lower voltage rating will have sufficient power output to stop an attacker. A report written in 2004 at the Eastern Michigan University demonstrates that the benefits of stunning devices outweigh the risks and are an effective method for apprehending criminals in a timely manner compared to other devices.

Though the terms have become synonymous to most, a TASER and a stun gun are not the same. So, first things first. TASER is a name brand, and ”stun gun” is a blanket term for a device that delivers an electric shock to an attacker when the electric probes contact the body.

It’s safe to say we know a little about self-defense. So, let’s jump in and break down some of the most common questions we get about stun guns.

Stoping

Stun guns use high-voltage electricity to stop an attacker by momentarily disabling muscle control. An effective stun gun should deliver up to 4 milliamps. The voltage will generally range from 50,000 volts on the low end, up to as much as 80,000,000 or more volts.

Tasers are legal for consumer use and ownership in 49 states, with the states of Hawaii, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts being the most recent.

Stun guns, or at least a primitive type thereof, have been around since the 1700s. A Leyden jar was used to store an electrical charge from static buildup. The cattle prod was the first useful product that followed this line of thought, and it also helped develop the more efficient methods of delivering an electric shock that was non-fatal. Cattle prods are still being used by ranchers to this day.

The first TASER device was created by Jack Cover in the 1970s. “TASER” is simply the brand name for the product. Due to the popularity it gained over the years, just like “Kleenex” has become a stand-in term for “tissue”, TASER has become a layman’s term for “stun gun.”

Other things to consider are shapes and sizes. The size of your hands is crucial in determining the right “fit” for you. The shape of the stun gun may not matter to you if you intend to conceal it in your purse, pocket, or backpack until you sense danger. Conversely, you may want something powerful but small, so you can always carry it in your hands.

But wait, a TASER does the same thing, right? Yes, but the difference between a stun gun and TASER is this: upon firing, TASER devices shoot two metal probe darts a distance of 15 feet to reach an attacker before he reaches you. A stun gun is a close quarters device with two contact probes that must make contact with an attacker to administer the electric shock.

These less-lethal weapons were born out of the turbulent 1960s from the anti-war protests on the college campus in Berkeley, California, where law enforcement clashed with protesters in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention to the Kent State Massacre that left four dead and nine wounded. These events demonstrated the need for law enforcement to have other options available besides firearms.

Both stun guns and TASERS are used for the same purpose, but one is a heavy duty ranged device, while the other is for close quarters.
