Elliptically polarized light can be obtained by scattering of unpolarized light from loss-less (real refractive index n ), non-spherical particles whose dimensions are not necessarily small compared with a wavelength. We represent such a particle by a finite or infinite number of Rayleigh spheres and thereby derive approximate expressions for the total scattered intensity I and for the circularly polarized component, V . Elongated particles give a polarization with an angular dependence similar to that for the absorbing Rayleigh ellipsoids investigated by Thomas Schmidt. However, the fractional circular polarization, q = V/I , depends on wavelength λ in a manner varying with particle size. If n – 1 ≪ 1, and if the thickness of such a particle is d ≪ λ /2π, then |$q\lesssim20(n-1)\enspace d^2\lambda^{-2}$| .
