Waterway information signs These signs display general lock or other waterway information to boaters. They augment waterway safety signs. These signs use a color combination of medium blue and white. Depending on function, the figure and background relationship will vary. Consistent use of these color standards is important for the effectiveness of this program. All regulated information and instruction signs will have a white retroreflective background with medium blue retroreflective legend and overbar. These signs are provided to assist recreational boaters and viewed at short distances of 50 to 125 feet. The material of the sign sheeting must be retro-reflective, however in order to reduce the risk of blinding glare highly reflective prismatic material need not be used. Two examples of waterway information signs are presented here. For more information on this sign type, consult the Sign Standards Manual, section 14, Lock, Dam, and Waterway Signs. "NOTICE" Signs The purpose of Notice signs is to communicate guidance, rules, or other information to the viewer. They may be used to regulate visitor activities or to provide notice of a safety procedure. Notice signs must not be used to warn of safety hazards that could cause injury or death; in such cases, an approved Danger, Warning, or Caution sign must be used. The text on Notice as well as Safety Information and Restricted signs may be customized with the approval of the district sign program manager. There are three formats in the Corps of Engineers Sign Standards Manual, EP310-1-6a: Recreation - section 7 for grids on pages 7-63 to 7-65 Workplace - section 11 for grids on page 11-3 Locks, Dams, & Waterways Information Signs – section 14. However, use grids on page 7-63 to 7-65 with Helvetica Medium legend and +30% extended letter spacing. Land-viewed Notice signs for recreation and other public areas Note that these are custom signs using the same grid as custom recreation signs with Corps brown background. The safety blue color helps stand out an important message from the normal Corps brown signs in an area, and should be used judiciously. The following are examples of the three grids available in this format.
