Hi. So, Shower in a Can ... What is it? In short, we’re developing Shower in a Can® - a dry shower product ... that’s in a can ... It’s an antibacterial foam you apply all over your skin and hair, that requires no rinsing and that dries quickly and naturally - no need for a towel either! Basically - it’s a Shower ... in a Can (see what we’ve done there?) It’s in testing at the moment with some lab boffins taking time off from doing rocket science, so we need to wait a few weeks before we can test it on some students; but we’ve been using it over the past couple of months and there’s been no noticeable impacts on us! We always look like this! It’s vegan friendly, so no animal testing or animal derived ingredients, it doesn’t use alcohol or parabens, and as the name suggests, it’s in a 100ml recyclable aluminium can (not plastic) and has a pump dispenser that generates the foam – not need for SSLs! Now - there are obvious places where this could be used - camping, festivals, sporting events ... simply anywhere you can’t get a shower, but you want to get clean and fresh. Initially we’re focussing Shower in a Can on those who aren’t comfortable showering in public, but want to do exercise or sport, or those who have trouble showering themselves, due to age, injury or disability allowing them to maintain their independence and dignity. We’d love you to join us on the Shower in a Can journey. We’re not completely sure of the route, but with your help we’ll get there. Want in? Then follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and get (dry) showering! Thanks! Ben & Stuart

Place. Not Sector. Earlier this week I joined the Place Based Impact Investing Network meeting, hosted by Sarah Forster, Sam Monger and the team at The Good Economy, at Bristol City Hall. A group determined to reset the Investment agenda in the UK. I listened intently to Justin Olosunde FRGS of West of England Combined Authority talk about their work with Bristol & Bath Regional Capital, to deliver a £100m place-based Net Zero Fund, and to Mark Hepworth, co-founder of The Good Economy, speak about the need for a framework for place-based investment in SMEs. Tom Taylor of British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA) shared his views on the role of private capital in driving inclusive growth, from Amy Crofton about the impact of Foresight Group’s regional funds, Caroline Norbury, OBE about Creative UK’s investment in regional creative businesses, Jari Moate of BBRC’s work with WECA, Lisa Smith of Midlands Mindforge model for investment in regional spin-outs (and a very similar model to the one we at Tech South West is rolling out across the South West to support the creation of Angel Groups, with the support of Angel Investors Bristol) and Jamie Broderick from Impact Investing Institute about the successes and challenges of local lending through CDFIs. It was an inspiring session - but it also highlighted the extent of change at all levels from central government down through local government, in services procurement, in local investment readiness, and changes from the investment markets to focus more on the wider impact of local investment versus direct investment return. This evening Rt Hon Rachel Reeves will announce (much trailed) changes to the pension sector which SHOULD unlock significant investment into UK infrastructure projects, to regional investment and to supporting early stage, innovative businesses. The move to consolidating the 86 local government pension schemes into a handful of “Mega Funds” may have economies of scale benefits - and no doubt benefits to a small number of major asset managers - but there is a risk that this consolidation will mean funds lose their regional focus and move us further away from the need to invest in Place rather than Sector. A Storm in a CGT Cup? So - the much awaited budget finally arrived. Much of it had been trailed before hand - but interestingly, the impact on early stage startups and scaleup businesses was perhaps not as bad as had been expected. And for investors using S/EIS, the increases in CGT could in fact make it even more attractive to invest! There is still lots to read, analyse and digest but at the time of writing, increases in the higher rate of CGT from 20% to 24% has a potential negative impact on those with investments, it does mean investing via tax efficient schemes like Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) and Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) - which got a mention in the budget speech - just got even more attractive as qualifying gains are free from CGT. This, combined with the significant income tax reliefs, means an additional rate tax payer using the SEIS scheme could eventually be risking as little as 15.5% of their actual investment amount. This could mean more investors look to early stage innovative businesses as potential investments! For founders themselves - business asset disposal relief is to rise from 10% to 14% in April’25 and to 18% in April’26. Founders rely on this relief as a lower tax to pay when they come to exit their businesses after years of hard work and sacrifice. The increase had been trailed as potentially higher - so on balance it’s not as bad as expected. I’ve been around founders long enough to know that they don’t stop becoming founders because they think they’re going to have to pay tax at the end of it - as some lobbyists might want you to think - they do it because they feel they’re going be successful and want to make a difference. And with S/EIS continuing to give exited founders the ability to offset or defer CGT, they can reinvest in new innovation unencumbered. More impactful, perhaps, for small businesses is the increase in National Insurance for employers. However, the Employment Allowance for small businesses has been increased from £5000 to £10,500 and the £100k eligibility cap has been removed. Swings and roundabouts. Overall - we heard positive things about investment in R&D for innovative businesses, and with the increased attractiveness of S/EIS schemes for investors seeking shelter from CGT, we hope this is something we can leverage to improve access to capital for start-ups and scale-ups in the South West. 🌟 A huge thank you to Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants, Headline Partner for the Tech South West Awards, for hosting the Meet the Finalists & Partners event at their Bristol offices last night! 🌟 👏 A big thank you and very well done to our amazing finalists! Over the course of the evening, we had the pleasure of hearing from last year's winners: Hugo Adams from Kelpi, Professor Matt Freeman and Tom El-Shawk from Future Space - Bristol as well as Ben Cooper from Tech South West, and John Talbot from Bishop Fleming. It was a fantastic evening of networking, where we learned more about some of the incredible tech organisations in the region, connected with our sponsors, and enjoyed a celebratory drink 🥂. It was great to see so many familiar and new faces from the inspiring South West tech scene — including Caroline Orr, Hazel Tucker, Scott Preece, Bob Barnes, Zara Powell, Isobel Shaw, Chris Dyson, Colin Dart, Philippa Collison , Sian Fussell, Craig Newman, David Burnet , Anthony Peake Matthew Ratsey, Anthony Story and many more . Another great turnout for our November AIB Pitch Event. AIB members were treated to pitches from Matthew Gibbs of Market Research data analysis firm Bayes Price, and from Dr Chen Mao Davies of family health app Anya. Both founders gave excellent and compelling presentations, and members got the opportunity to ask questions, both in the Q&A session and over drinks afterwards. Rumour has it conversations continued over a curry afterwards! We’re excited to continue our support for South West and South Wales based founders, seeking investment for early stage businesses with big potential. We’ve reached 120 members - and continue to look for new Angels to join our fledgling Angel Group. The more Angels we have, the more we can do to help fill the evident funding gap in the region: “Access to funding hinders my growth potential” (48% of SW tech firms - Tech South West annual members survey 2024). Leg one complete! I’ve got a very busy couple of days! This morning I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk all about Angel Investment, Angel Investors Bristol and the Tech South West Angel Investor Programme at Devon & Plymouth Chamber's #cityconversations event at the amazing Plymouth offices of Foot Anstey . I've made some excellent connections and will be back very soon to continue those conversations. A huge thanks to Stuart Elford, Clare Baker (Halton), Kelly Smith and the Devon Chamber team for the opportunity to not only present, but to also hear about the great work of Plymouth City Council and University of Plymouth in building a talent pool to support local businessses. I am SO excited! After a morning of managed chaos (panic) and plan B’s (Joe Bevan, Richard Beedell and I stepping into the MC duties) as half of the team were snowed in, we’re back on track and getting ready to go. And Ashton Gate looks AMAZING! I can’t wait to welcome over 350 of the South West’s finest for a great night! Angel Investors Bristol Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants Howden Program | B Corp™

I am getting VERY excited! For those that don't know - I am a lifelong Bristol City Football Club fan (COYRs!) and a big supporter of the Bristol Bears Rugby team. So, to hold the Tech South West Awards 2024 in my home town, and at my favourite stadium - Ashton Gate - is OFF THE SCALE! Headline Partners Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants will be joined by Supporting Partner Program | B Corp™ and Entertainment Partner Howden, plus 25 other category sponsors and hundreds of members of the South West ecosystem, to celebrate the best of tech from across the region. With 25 categories, over 350 entries, and 122 finalists, judged by over 40 judges, it's going to be an epic night! I'm also super proud that Angel Investors Bristol is a Supporting Partner of the Awards. AIB has had an amazing year - having completed three investments so far, with three more in the pipeline, plus another pitch event on Thursday where I'm confident the quality of the pitches will mean we'll invest even more. We'll be celebrating our impact in the region. The 2023 Awards at Sandy Park in Exeter last year were an absolute blast, and this year I am expecting even bigger and even better at the best venue!
