The Savvy Inspector® is used in optical factories for the quality inspection of surface imperfections such as scratches, wipe marks, holes, coating imperfection or coating defects as well as edge chip.
These imperfections are classified in the dimensional method of ISO 10110-7/ISO 14997 by their geometric sizes or in MIL-PRF-13830B by the visibility or appearance of imperfections. Recently, this visibility type of specifications, known as the “scratch and dig” specification, was added to ISO 10110-7/ISO 14997 as well.

laboratory instruments are used to be educational instrument for scientific research and teaching tools, machine vision and experiment application.
Tests for surface imperfections are carried out in practice both by random sampling and by 100 % inspection. The inspection process is usually carried out purely subjectively by an inspector who classifies the imperfection purely visually. In the case of testing according to MIL, the sample is rate according to its appearance by compared with artifact standards (scratch and dig masters) that show the standardized defect of each class to the greatest possible extend.
De-Risked Work Process: Open-panel inspections are, by their nature, high risk because they introduce a host of potential variables: stirring dust, agitating a conductor or misplaced tool, scaring a rodent, possibly dropping parts into the enclosure, etc. Infrared windows maintain an enclosed and guarded state (per the standards) and remove the high-risk work tasks, thereby reducing the risk of performing thermography through an IR window. The new closed-panel work task does not expose personnel to energized conductors, and is not a task that could trigger an arc. As such, using an IR window is similar to looking in a visual inspection window {Link visual inspection window to our page for same}, reading a panel meter, or simply walking past the same equipment. Facility managers can take comfort in knowing that the new closed-panel is de-risking their inspection process. No longer does an IR inspection represent a threat of a catastrophic outage.

The Savvy Inspector® operator interface is designed for easy factory-floor operation, while expanding its application in the role of “Master Inspector” for QA, QC and MRB decisions. The operator enters the inspection level required, and then uses the manual x-y stage or the joystick to locate the desired defect on the real-time viewing screen. In motorizied systems the “autoscan” feature creates indexed image files for the entire surface, documenting the condition of the optic and allowing the operator to identify regions on the part which require further review. The coordinates can be entered and the system returns to the desired location with the push of a button.

XIR Infrared Windows with patent-pending polymer infrared optic is uniquely suited for industrial and facilities maintenance environments: Built like a tank, resilient and warranted for life, accurate and compatible with all models of cameras, big enough to see it all with fewer windows, yet surprisingly affordable.
Savvy Inspector’s® large 9 by 12 mm field of view makes it easy to identify the locations of imperfections. A 1 mm² test area is used to classify and grade the imperfection. Defined brightness makes even small imperfections visible.

Inspect the Un-Inspectable: After completing arc flash surveys / incident energy analyses, many facilities discover that some percentage of their equipment has extraordinary incident energy levels (per ANSI/IEEE 1584 or similar calculations). Such equipment receives a "Dangerous" label, and becomes off limits to thermographers. IR windows allow the thermographers to still survey desired targets in "Dangerous equipment" (through the IR window) while equipment remains closed and guarded in compliance with standards like NFPA 70E and CSA Z462.
Easily comply with OSHA, NFPA 70E, CSA Z462 and similar electrical safety mandates by using closed-panel inspection methods. Infrared (IR) Windows allow workers to perform IR inspections of electrical components while keeping energized electrical equipment closed, and in "normal operating condition."Closed-panel inspections eliminate inherently high-risk tasks, such as removing panels or opening hinged doors, making IR inspections safer for personnel, plant assets and processes.

Data Quality: Industry best-practices and standards (including NFPA 70B) note that IR scans must be performed when conductors are fully loaded (or as close as possible). Yet on inspection day(s) it is quite common that at least some percentage of equipment is unloaded or lightly loaded. Consequently, data is gathered and analyzed under conditions that could easily yield false-negative results. The ease, safety and speed of inspecting through an IR window means that thermographers can schedule inspections on days and hours when equipment is "running all out" – the best time to gather data.

Another factor to consider is that open-panel inspections, by their nature, introduce the possibility of many variables for reflected energy (off highly reflective metallic components. Less experienced thermographers could easily misinterpret theses these reflections from hot or cold elements in the background, resulting in false-positive and false-negative reports. Because the closed doors and panels of the enclosure are a relatively uniform ambient temperature, actual differences in temperature are more easily identified.

Access the Inaccessible:How does your facility inspect equipment that can no longer be opened while energized due to that equipment’s voltage or incident energy rating? How does your facility inspect equipment protected by switched interlocks? IR inspection windows allow maintenance engineers to monitor otherwise “inaccessible” equipment.
ExiscanTM won’t compromise on safety, accuracy or usability. That’s why we over-engineer our design and only use industrial-grade materials - like polymer, aluminum and stainless steel.
For careful review and documentation of a lens surface, Savvy Inspector® software offers data management tools. These allow the proper capture and archiving of screenshots as well as the grade for each error on a surface. Additionally, a summary log in CSV format or an inspection report is generated.

Savvy Inspector® software supports the optic’s surface error detection with little user influence. All commonly available comparison sets, including C7641866, can be selected for providing a direct objective classification of imperfections and judging them as pass or fail.
The software reports the scratch grade or dig value automatically. Scratch lengths are measured with the click of the mouse. The “always on” inspection mode and programmable grade bars allow the operator to get real-time feedback on whether a selected imperfection is acceptable or not with a simple visual interface.
Compliance: Comply with insurance mandates to perform annual infrared inspections, while also complying with the regulations imposed by NFPA 70E and CSA Z462. The de-risked work process of using an IR Window eliminates the high-risk tasks (opening the enclosures) associated with typical infrared inspections. As a result elevated levels of PPE are not required, and complying with the standards is automatic.
Ease of Inspection: Imagine the benefits of monitoring hyper-critical applications and "bad actors" more frequently using IR windows. In just a few minutes, without requiring elaborate PPE or work processes, thermographers will troubleshoot and inspect critical electrical equipment through the specially designed IR window optic, thereby eliminating inherently risky and time-consuming tasks. The ease of inspection provides facilities with the latitude to inspect more frequently to ensure maximum facility up time.

Especially in the last steps of glass processing, polishing and coating, defects can occur which locally impair the optical image of the glass. These defects are classified as follows:
The defined illumination and detection angles make the measurement reliable and consistent even when measurements are performed at different sites. The ring illumination is used to overcome judgement errors traditionally occurring due to part orientation.

Savvy Inspector® is designed to measure surface imperfections. The factory-calibrated inspection head uses invariant illumination and detection optics and proprietary analysis software to provide an objective, repeatable and recordable evaluation of the surface quality of optical components. It operates in accordance with ANSI/OEOSC OP1.002, Appendix C of MIL-PRF-13830B, Appendix A.3 of ISO 14997, and ISO 10110. It comes with calibration files traceable to the common standards.
Accumulation rules can be applied using the SavvyAccumulator™ spreadsheet. Custom calibration files can be created for specific project or customer needs by the Quality Engineer as needed. The calibration data can then be saved and accessed from the inspection mode.
