The mechanical stage in a microscope is a mechanism that’s been mounted on the stage to hold the microscope slide in order to hold it steady and to reposition it when needed. It’s an integral piece of any microscope as it enhances the stage’s function by allowing for highly precise movement of the specimen sample through the microscope’s field of view. In almost every instance, a mechanical stage consists of a slide holder, which is the device used for holding the slide in place so that it can be moved easily back and forth and side to side along both the X and the Y axis; the stage opening, which is the part of the stage that lets light pass through the specimen for better viewing; a stage lock control, which lets the viewer fix the stage into position; and graduated locator markings, which allow the viewer to note the location of significant details of the sample for return observation. Because they enable the movement of a slide in very small increments, mechanical stages are also incredibly beneficial when viewing samples at extremely high magnifications.
