Far-sightedness or hyperopia is the opposite of myopia. Those with the condition are able to see objects in the distance clearly but are unable to view closer objects clearly. It tends to affect those over 40, however, can affect people of all ages.

Myopia, commonly referred to as near-sightedness, is an eye condition whereby individuals experience viewing distant objects in a blurred manner while close objects are seen clearly. It is thought to occur when the eyes grow too long which results in light not focusing on the retina correctly.

Due to the clever structural glazing, the aesthetics are visually appealing, reflecting the building’s surroundings on all sides.

Retail outlets such as high-end fashion and jewelry stores, furniture and car showrooms, as well as restaurants and hotel lobbies, all share a common need: to give customers and passers-by a clear, unobstructed view of displayed products and inside spaces. This means the glass should offer the lowest possible reflection and glare combined with the highest transparency. In the daylight, storefront glass can act like a mirror, with customers struggling to see clearly the displayed products.

Coma aberrations are caused when light rays from one edge of the pupil focuses before those from the opposing edge. Visually those with this type of aberration may experience smearing of an image so that images may appear to have a tail like a comet.

There is a range of treatment options available for lower order aberrations in particular. For children and young adults with long and short-sightedness, no treatment may be needed as their eyes may adapt naturally, resulting in their vision not being significantly affected. For older adults, treatment is usually required, as due to age, eyes are less able to adapt. The main treatments are glasses or contact lens to ensure light is focused on the retina, and laser eye surgery which changes the shape of the cornea and means contact lenses and glasses don’t need to be worn. The same treatment options also exist for astigmatism.

Those with astigmatism have an eye that is shaped like a rugby ball than rather football. As a result, light tends to be focused at more than one place in the eye, causing blurry vision, eye strain and headaches. It is usually accompanied by short or long-sightedness.

Anti reflectioncoating

Anti-reflective glass is an advanced coated glass with reflection control properties that reduce the reflection of light on the surface of the glass. It increases the light transmission and brightness, offering better contrast definition for any applications where reflections can be an issue, including retail storefronts, car showrooms, zoos, sports facilities, viewing areas, or special applications such as museum displays and digital signage.

Anti-reflective glass provides maximum visibility while minimizing light reflection and glare. The result is crystal-clear views.

The most basic goal of glass is the ability to see through it, but often this poses a paradox. While the glass itself is crystal clear, its surroundings can provide obstacles to the view in the form of glare and reflection. A challenge for architects is to maximize visibility whilst minimizing reflection.

Choosing the right glass for picture frames is essential. Select the right glass and you can reduce glare and reflect light away from the glass, maintaining the integrity of the picture, photograph or painting.

Described as small optical irregularities, aberrations are imperfections of the eye that result in light being unable to focus onto the retina effectively as well as defects in visual image. There are two types of aberrations; lower-order aberrations (0, 1st and 2nd order), and higher-order aberrations (3rd,4th…).

Due to the clever structural glazing, the aesthetics are visually appealing, reflecting the building’s surroundings on all sides.

Our latest anti-reflective glass provides the highest transparency of any of our products to date. It has a light transmission above 98% and a color rendering index (CRI) of 99, which means that the colors you see through the glass are almost exactly those you see without glass (perfectly true colors would have a CRI of 100). This is particularly interesting for retail storefronts and museums where the objects displayed should be presented at their very best.

In museums, glass displays are used to protect precious artefacts from damage or distress, while presenting them in the best possible light. But sometimes the glass itself can act as an obstruction to the view. Unwanted glare, reflections or reduced lighting levels prevent visitors from having a crystal-clear view and seeing the object in its original color. Using anti-reflective glass to reduce unwanted glare and reflection enables closer, more intimate interaction with the displayed object.

Classed as a third order aberration, trefoil has a more minor affect on image quality compared to an equal amount of coma.

Our anti-reflective glass is available in thicknesses from 3 to 15 mm, and in sizes up to jumbo (3,21m x 6 m). It is available on Guardian UltraClear® low-iron glass, for maximum transparency and color neutrality. The anti-reflective coating can be applied on one side or on both surfaces of the glass for improved anti-reflective performance. Our anti-reflective glass can be heat-treated for safety applications. It is also available on laminated glass, with a new PVB interlayer that reduces the yellowish tint.

Wavefront analysis is used to measure aberrations of the optical system. There are a variety of methods that can be used to assess ocular aberrations including Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing, Tscherning, spatially resolved refractometry and optical path difference aberrometry. Furthermore, it is typically performed using devices similar to the Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensors.

👉 Expert talk  For façade applications, achieving the desired transparency and low reflection while meeting local regulations in terms of energy performance can be a challenge. When combining anti-reflective glass in an insulating glass unit (IGU) with other glass products, the light reflection of the IGU will increase as you have more glass surfaces. You can still achieve a low-reflection level while meeting the thermal performance required by carefully selecting the right glass products and coatings. Don’t hesitate to contact our team of experts for guidance with your project.

Anti-reflective glass, reduces undesirable light reflection and glare on the glass while increasing transparency, creating clearer, uninterrupted and more natural views through the glass.

Anti-reflective glass can be combined in an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU) with thermal insulation or solar control glass to further improve the energy efficiency of the glazing and help keep temperatures comfortable for the building’s occupants all year round.

Choosing the right glass for interior and exterior digital signage applications such as Public Information Displays, Digital Signage, traffic displays, retail signs, embedded devices and biomedical displays is crucial. The right glass can provide displays with optimal aesthetic features combined with performance attributes such as laminated, UV protection, and EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) shielding.

The human eye can be affected by a number of aberrations which can reduce the quality of retinal images and general visual perception. Research has shown that age increases the probability of developing higher order aberrations in particular.

The eyes of young people tend to be less affected by higher order aberrations due to the partial compensation of aberration between the surface of the cornea and the internal optics. This mechanism has been found to work systematically for spherical aberrations and horizontal comas. As they are only affected by a small number of spherical aberrations and comas, young eyes are thought to approximate to an aplanatic optical system. However, as we age, more aberrations occur on average, specifically spherical aberrations as well as horizontal comas.

It is thought that HOAs are responsible for individuals reporting complaints of glare, halos and reduction in contrast sensitivity following corneal refractive surgery. Approximately 90% of aberrations are caused by the cornea.

The devices focus a low-power beam onto the retina and then resulting reflected rays of light can then be analyzed. After passing through a variety of lenses and onto a detector, in a perfect optical system, the rays would be parallel and focus on a single plane. Due to the complexity of the eyes’ optics, this may not occur. The degree of which the image deviates from the expected focal point of each lens in the system represents a ‘wavefront error’ or aberration. The wavefront error produced from the wavefront analysis is further broken down into components that mathematically and visually describe the specific elements of the aberration. These components are split into two categories; higher order aberrations and lower order aberrations.

The anti-reflective coating applied onto the glass enables the light reflection of the glass to be reduced to 0.6% (in the double-sided version, where the coating is applied on both surfaces of the glass), compared to around 8% for standard uncoated float glass. Anti-reflective glass is ideal for applications where the view through the glass is the experience, such as a roof top viewing area, a football stadium, or a zoo where the glass can offer a truer, more immersive experience.
