Silicon is used as an optical window primarily in the 3 to 5 micron band and as a substrate for production of optical filters. Large blocks of Silicon with polished faces are also employed as neutron targets in Physics experiments.

An inexpensive means to observe spectra from various light sources and to measure the wavelength of light. Consists of a plastic film, on the surface of which the pattern of a master grating with 1000 lines per mm has been impressed. The film is mounted in a 50 mm square cardboard holder with an aperture of dimensions (l × w): 35 × 35 mm.The 1000 lines/mm film is an ideal choice for emission spectroscopy experiments as it allows the spectrum to be spread over a broad area, and the cardboard holder has a wavelength scale printed on it for semi-quantitative analysis of spectra.
