Couldn't we make it mandatory to provide the weighted estimation percentage (whether by the corporate or by an external third party) for each of the ESG metrics? For example: is the quality of the data points in the #CSRD or #SFDR or #ISSB questioned?

Waverton Investment Management noticed that Vulcan Materials' water intensity was substantially higher than its peers. By engaging, it learned that this was due to inaccurate data by a third-party vendor, which had to estimate Vulcan's water intensity (and did so inaccurately) due to Vulcan's limited use of metering. The engagement led to Vulcan undertaking several projects to properly determine its water usage. This unusual engagement has the following takeaways: 1. Investors shouldn't have a knee-jerk reaction to ESG metrics, e.g. dumping companies with high water (or carbon) intensity. Similarly, clients shouldn't evaluate investors only by their ESG metrics of their portfolio. 2. ESG metrics are often taken as truth, but are often estimated by the data provider. This goes beyond water; in a recent paper, my coauthors and I find that 68% of scope 1 carbon emissions and 93% of scope 3 emissions are estimated. 3. Even if ESG metrics are disclosed by the company, not estimated by the data provider, they're still estimated. Companies won't be able to meter all of their sites. This contrasts with (say) aggregate sales figures for a retail company, where it is possible to calculate the sales of each store and aggregate them. Doubt the Data. ESG data is still useful, but only if we understand what it actually captures. See p9 of https://lnkd.in/e5VBkHRD
Absolutely agree with the points you've made here. Great that there was investigation into the rationale for the discrepancy and learnings for both company and investors. Shu Ling Liauw, Rohan Bowater, Miheka Patel, Ph.D. here's some food for thought! Thanks for sharing Alex Edmans

Thanks for highlighting such an important point Alex Edmans Data is a useful part of the decision-making process. It is not THE process. As you say, we need to understand what it actually captures and do the work accordingly. Steven Bowen, Nawar Alsaadi, FSA, SIPC, Illana Adamson I think you will find this interesting.

That could be a life lesson on a much broader level. Don't focus on the headlines, always read the contents page. As we move to a more regulated ESG data market, it is going to be important to upskill the 'readers' as much as the submitters.

Having spent decades auditing EHS operations, systems, data and reporting at the facility level, I’ve seen similar things many many times before. That is the (underappreciated) reason why I am such a vocal advocate of ensuring ESG data is verified by internal audit groups or external auditors before that data is reported externally- including in ESG questionnaires. But I have been less vocal about companies conducting audits or technical reviews of third party ratings and reports along with underlying data. That is definitely something companies need to do as part of their ESG processes and controls.

We see this all the time. It’s a great source of market inefficiencies that can create alpha (shhh, don’t tell anyone!). We have seen similar cases in social housing and other sectors where data is poor. Great for active managers who actually do the work and “get it”.
We had a similar story with mining royalty companies being classed as extractives by a third-party provider, despite a different, asset-light model. After engagement with data provider, they were reclassified!

Alex Edmans - data accuracy is critical as you highlight. We have the same challenges in many industries. They can be both positive and negative, sadly, so being sure on what is actually being measured/captured is so critical. Too many assumptions still being made (and more importantly not fully disclosed or explained).
