Where u represents the working distance (WD), N is the f-number, c is the Circle of Confusion, and f is the focal length. Note that equation (1) does not take into account lens aberrations. In some cases, when the circle of confusion is negligibly small relative to the Aperture (term c² tends to 0), and the working distance is significantly larger than the focal length (𝑢 − 𝑓 ≈ 𝑢), equation (1) can be approximated by [1].
All the above shows that high spatial resolution with large DoF can only be achieved at the expense of a high F-number (lower throughput and longer integration time).
We recommend using the upgraded magnet laser shroud for ease of mounting and also safety. The laser is contained in a shielded housing which restricts laser light above an angle of 10 degrees at 2′. This means that if you are looking down at the laser then you will not see any of the beam artifacts that potentially can cause harm. This is especially good if you have a shop where people can be walking in without protective eyewear.

ii. The Aperture of the lens, as F-number: a system with a large F-number would have a larger DoF. However, less light would enter the system, which would then be at the expense of the integration time.

All laser diode components are press fit into copper 12mm housings and come mounted in a custom aluminum heat sink fitted with thermal paste for heat dissipation. The design allows for easy mounting on CNC machine spindle heads or in front of 3D print heads or on their own in a machine. The diagrams of the heat sink and mounting are found below:

Every optical imaging system has a depth of field (DoF). It is defined as the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects in sharp focus. The DoF should be distinct from another optical property, called the Depth of Focus, which refers to the tolerance of placement of the image plane concerning the lens position (Figure 1).
Depth of fieldcalculator
An imaging system’s DoF is crucial when measuring non-flat samples. It could be in a laboratory, an industrial system, and remote sensing applications. The DoF can be estimated as follows [1].
i. The Working Distance: DoF increases with the measurement distance. Notice that this is at the expense of the spatial sampling of the object.
The current setting to keep your laser lasting the full lifetime is listed in the following table along with the expected output power of the laser.
This is the maximum expected output power of the laser at full current levels. Running at this level will reduce the lifetime of the laser and should only be done with this understanding. In some cases, this number will also be the same as the recommended. In those cases, there will be no loss of lifetime on the laser (example is the 4.2W laser and the 1W laser).
iv. The focal length of the front objective: the DoF decreases while the focal length increases. In practice, a lens with a wider FOV has a larger DoF.

Currently we are offering three diode lasers in the 445nm wavelength and one in the 405nm wavelength. All of these diode lasers pack a pretty big punch in a small package. They engrave and cut many materials and are detailed in our applications page.
Each one of these diodes are pressed fit mounted in an aluminum housing and has an aluminum mountable heat-sink. The laser is set in the heat sink with thermally conductive paste for better heat distribution. The front of the component contains a adjustable glass focusing lens for the laser output which is our High Efficiency Lens in a brass holder.

The lasers will all have a slightly different spot size at focus. The smallest is the 405nm laser. It can make microscopic engravings and super fine details. The largest is the 4.2W and 7W laser, which can still engrave well, but will not have the detail that the other lasers will without the High Efficiency Lens option. With the High Resolution lens on the 4.2W and 7W, the spot sizes will be similar to the smaller power lasers.
iii. Circle of confusion (CoC): this is often corresponding to the pixel size, in the spatial dimension, along the slit, at the slit level (also taking into account the magnification of the system). A camera with large pixels will have large DoF. It also means that spatial binning would increase the DoF. PS: in practice, the (CoC) is limited by the system’s optical resolution but not the detector’s pixel size. Using the pixel size as CoC gives a minimum approximation for the DoF.
