Readers discuss architects' significance in society and the role state-mandated licensure plays (or doesn't play). Historian Ole Bouman commented: "A very good article that raises various questions about the legal mandate of architects and the ways it is, or should be protected. Food for thought for professionals. But it also raises questions about the cultural mandate of architecture and its broad acceptance among society. Food for thought for creatives, for example when they ponder what they want to do with their lives. Or for historians who want to ponder in what sense architecture contributed to a civilization. Or in which degree it still does." Another reader shared: "Can we speculate on what would be like if all states' architectural licenses were abolished in the '60s? One of my speculations would be, that architecture is only designed by huge conglomerates, who can afford some kind of compensation if anything goes wrong. The design and meaning of architecture would be long modified as the mass product that comes with options on the trim." "This article raises two issues: 1) what value does registration bring to practice?; 2) what value does an architect bring to construction? These are cultural questions more than legal ones as the redundancy and specificity of codes makes the 'life and safety' issue virtually moot today," reads a third comment in part. What do you think? Nimby Yimby: Building Vibrant Urban Communities Urban areas worldwide are grappling with the pressing need for increased housing. While it may seem like a simple matter of building more homes, the reality is far more nuanced. Enter the terms "Nimby" and "Yimby," two sides of the same coin in the housing debate. Politics and Resistance Nimby, an acronym for "Not In My Backyard," represents the resistance often encountered when proposing new developments, especially in established neighbourhoods. It’s often put-down as resistance to change, but is more likely to be concerned with impacts on neighbourhood, amenity, and quality. On the flip side, Yimby, or "Yes In My Backyard," advocates for more development, streamlining approval processes by removing red bureaucratic tape and reducing objector influence. They strongly advocate for increased density as a means to address growing demand and housing affordability. Multi-faceted However, it's crucial to recognize that housing supply and affordability are multi-faceted issues. Factors like land prices, regulatory processes, and capital flows all play a role in shaping urban landscapes. Simply adding more units doesn't necessarily solve the problem. It requires consideration of the broader ecosystem in which homes exist. At the local level there are issues of proximity to jobs and shops, amenity, context, neighbourhood and community, all equally important factors in the creation of vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive neighbourhoods and cities. Red Tape and Planning One major hurdle in addressing housing needs is the bureaucratic red tape that comes with the planning and development processes. In Victoria, the State government provides oversight and policy directions, while planning schemes provide strategic and local frameworks. These include a range of goals including environmental, economic, housing, heritage and transport, while the local framework tends to be more site-specific. Local governments normally assess proposed developments, with disputes determined through VCAT (Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal), guided by their interpretation of the planning scheme. This often requires a of balancing act between competing objectives and context. Holistic Solutions for Sustainable Communities Ultimately, the goal must be to create communities where people can thrive. To achieve vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive cities, we need greater vision supported by a broad social licence. A more balanced Nimby and Yimby perspective, that enables us to work towards building cities where everyone has access to quality homes, in the right locations, that foster belonging and opportunity for all.   #HousingDebate #NimbyYimby #AffordableHousing #SustainableCities #UrbanDevelopment #QualityHomes

Happy to share Wild Ways 3.0 California Connectivity, the work out 12 outstanding Harvard University Graduate School of Design students from spring 2024, taught in collaboration with Nina-Marie Lister The studio explored themes of peri-urban, rural, regional, and continental connectivity and resilience through the lens of wildlife and landscape infrastructure projects throughout California. It imagines new public landscapes and infrastructure that both re-stitch critical wildlands and forge new bonds between humans and wild creatures. https://lnkd.in/epZyVFvJ The work is grounded in the intertwined challenges of the global polycrisis, i.e. climate change and biodiversity loss in the Anthropocene. We engage conversations, projects and precedents that address our relationships to other species and the environments we share and on which our futures depend. The book is a showcase of students’ proposals, a combination of strategic, tactical, and both small- and large-scale interventions tuned to the specific needs of endemic and endangered wildlife. Collectively, we are hoping to advance conversations about the wide variety of ways to better address habitat connectivity and to highlight the roles that design and designers can play. ****New on the Podcast**** How can inclusive design spur community connections and build stronger partnerships in the process? https://lnkd.in/g3e9x6wW During the COVID pandemic, the Van Alen Institute and the Urban Design Forum collaborated to launch Neighborhoods Now, a program shepherding resources, both funding and people, toward pandemic recovery and strengthening community partnerships across four boroughs in New York City. One notable community partnership was with Think!Chinatown, an intergenerational non-profit based in Manhattan’s Chinatown that fosters community through neighborhood engagement, storytelling and the arts. Manhattan’s Chinatown was severely impacted by the pandemic, not only due to the health crisis but also a rise in anti-Asian hate. Through partnering with Neighborhoods Now, Think!Chinatown sought to unite the community, spark joy and connection amongst community members, and create a warm, welcoming space where residents could once again feel safe. From this partnership, the Chinatown Night Market was born. Launched the following summer, the Night Markets not only created a welcoming, safe, and joyful space for community members, but they also brought partners from across the city together to rebuild trust and re-focus on community needs through the implementation of inclusive design. In this new podcast, we learn how this partnership grew, how trust was rebuilt, and how this project kept Manhattan’s Chinatown community at its core. We talk with Andrew Brown (Van Alen Institute) and Yin Kong (Think!Chinatown) as they share the key elements that made this community partnership successful, and discuss how programs like Neighborhoods Now can create lasting positive change for communities. For the Seattle DJC’s Back to School issue, Miller Hull Partner, Ruth Baleiko, FAIA, LEED AP, and Principal, Elizabeth Moggio, AIA, wrote a piece on our pre-design for a new academic building for Western Washington University at the Olympic College Poulsbo Campus. The article highlights the strategic importance of meeting students where they are and the critical role a new facility will play in education and workforce development in the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. "Each college and university has a unique approach to supporting its students along a continuum of care, particularly for place-bound and non-traditional students. To craft a successful predesign, architects must collaborate with critical campus voices to make a clear and compelling case to the Legislature for funding. It is essential to set the document and the ultimate project up with flexibility and adaptability, particularly in the program, to weather the uncertainties of funding and economic conditions over time. This predesign described a new 44,200-gross-square-foot facility that will provide essential spaces dedicated to hands-on learning, student support and technological research. It will house critical programs in high-demand fields and serve as the new home for WWU’s Cyber Range Poulsbo program, a vital resource for cybersecurity education and research across the state. By enhancing access to post-secondary education and aligning academic offerings with regional workforce needs, this project is set to transform the local economy and support the state’s goal of increasing credential attainment among adults.
