Medium-wave or Ultraviolet B (UVB) lamps emit light in wavelengths from 280 to 315nm and are used for gel electrophoresis, viewing, and other procedures. UVB light is also used in transilluminators. Gels are stained with fluorescent dyes that bind to the nucleic acids to make them visible under UVB light. This technique helps researchers size PCR products, quantify DNA, and verify the integrity of extracted RNA.

Manufactured of impact-resistant plastic which resists fading or cracking. UVP™ Mini UV Lamps are small enough to fit in a pocket. Lightweight, portable lamp is excellent for field use.

Longwave or Ultraviolet A (UVA) lamps emit UV light from 315 to 400nm. UVA lamps are used for bacterial identification, staining, electrophoresis, pesticide analysis, fluorescence photography, visualizing nucleic acids, and other genetic work. UVA is also useful for monitoring chlorination, in fluorochemistry, titrations, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), food contamination identification, water testing, and forensic applications.

As the above video shows, these lenses satisfied a need for lighthouses that could shine farther and through dense layers of fog. The Fresnel lens, invented by Augustin-Jean Fresnel, helped do that by capturing all the light coming from a lamp, then magnifying and steering it in one direction. Suddenly, lighthouses became more useful and shipwrecks diminished.

Here at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you — threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country.

Select from longwave, midrange, shortwave or combination longwave and shortwave in the same lamp. UVP Ultra Violet Product™ Handheld UV Lamp uses two separate UV tubes for greater intensity than split-tube 6 watt models.

Hand-held 6 watt, shortwave UV lamp is uniquely designed with an ergonomically designed handle. UVP™ UVG-54 Handheld UV Lamp, 254nm is a compact 230V unit designed for use in sterilization and sanitation applications.

Shortwave or Ultraviolet C (UVC) lamps emit light in the 100 to 280nm range. Often used as germicidal lamps, UVC is commonly used to disinfect surfaces in laboratories and food-processing facilities and to disinfect water. UVC lamps are also used to cure polymers and for fluorescent analysis, in fluorochemistry, pesticide analysis, DNA and other biochemical testing, microbiological testing, electrophoresis, and photochemistry.

Use this viewing cabinet for optimal sample viewing with uniform UV illumination. Cole-Parmer™ High-Performance Ultraviolet Viewing Cabinets feature high-intensity 15-watt UV tubes. Control switches for selecting UV or white light are conveniently located on the top of the cabinet.

Innovative, versatile, and patented UV lamp for multiple applications. UVP™ 3UV™ Lamp provides longwave, shortwave and midrange UV light in one lamp.

The most important part of a lighthouse might be one of the beautiful tools hidden inside of it: the Fresnel lens, a breakthrough that changed seafaring and saved lives.

Photoactivate crosslinkers in UV-crosslinking methods with these compact, UV-lamps with 252nm, 302nm and 365nm short to long wavelength bulbs.

Our mission could not be more clear and more necessary: We have a duty to explain what just happened, and why, and what it means for you. We need clear-eyed journalism that helps you understand what really matters. Reporting that brings clarity in increasingly chaotic times. Reporting that is driven by truth, not by what people in power want you to believe.

Fresnel lenses are still in operation today. According to the US Lighthouse Society, more than 75 Fresnel lenses are in use in American lighthouses, and businesses such as Dan Spinella’s Artworks Florida craft replicas that capture the beauty — and functionality — of the 19th-century breakthrough.
