Plastic optical fiber (POF) was introduced to optical communication later than its glass counterpart. POF consists of both the core and cladding made from plastic or polymeric materials, rather than glass. The core is typically composed of PMMA (acrylic), which is a widely used general-purpose resin, leading to the alternative designation of PMMA optical fiber. Similar to glass optical fiber, POF transmits light through its core. Generally, POF is classified as multimode fiber, characterized by a larger core diameter ranging from 0.15 to 2 mm. Constructed from a single acrylic monofilament, plastic fiber optic cables are particularly effective when utilized with visible red status indicator light sources.
