Sie zeigen, dass Kohärenz einfach dadurch entsteht, dass einzelne Neuronen in einem Bereich aktiv sind und (synaptische) Impulse in anderen Bereichen erzeugen. Dies hat zur Folge, dass die elektrischen Signale in den einzelnen Bereichen auf vorhersehbare Weise kohärent werden. “Mit einer eleganten mathematischen Formel konnten wir zeigen, dass Kohärenz eine direkte Folge der anatomischen Verbindung zwischen zwei Hirnbereichen und der Signalstärke ist“, fasst Martin Vinck zusammen und betont: „Kohärenz ist keine Voraussetzung für Kommunikation!”

Als Marius Schneider seine Doktorandenstelle am Ernst Strüngmann Institut für Neurowissenschaften antritt, würde er nicht einmal im Traum daran denken, dass die Ergebnisse seines ersten Projekts kurz darauf in einer der führenden Fachzeitschriften seines Fachs veröffentlicht werden – und eine etablierte Theorie auf den Kopf stellen.

Um ihre Theorie zu beweisen, wandten die beiden Neurowissenschaftler ihre Gleichungen auf eine große Anzahl bereits vorhandener Datensätze an. Ihre Kolleginnen und Kollegen erhoben weitere Daten von Mäusen und Makaken, wobei sie neue Technologien wie Neuropixelsonden und Optogenetik, eine lichtgesteuerte Technik zur Steuerung der Aktivität von Neuronen, einsetzten. “Dies war eine echte Teamleistung! Ohne die Unterstützung und die großartige Arbeit aller Mitarbeiter unseres Labors wären wir niemals so schnell vorangekommen”, lobt Martin Vinck die Zusammenarbeit seiner Forschungsgruppe. “Das Ganze ist wirklich in Rekordzeit passiert”, ergänzt Marius Schneider und lässt seinen Blick durch die ESI-Bibliothek schweifen. Damit bezieht er sich auf die Teamarbeit. Es trifft aber auch auf ihn zu und seine erste große Veröffentlichung als Doktorand.
