Alcuni anni fa non era possibile realizzare in forma sufficientemente economica sensori di quelle dimensioni, perciò i costruttori decisero di orientarsi su sensori più piccoli, 15 x 22 mm. Per questo se montiamo un 50mm su una reflex digitale con sensore di formato APS-C, si avrà una resa equivalente a quella di un obiettivo da 75mm sulla pellicola.
