Una smart camera è un dispositivo sicuramente più economico, rispetto ai sistemi Computer-Based ma, a causa delle sue dimensioni compatte, ha dei limiti oggettivi come la potenza di calcolo e la qualità ottica, avendo di norma sensori di piccole dimensioni e lenti altrettanto piccole. Un sistema computer-based, invece, ha un costo decisamente più alto ma, oltre ad una potenza di calcolo superiore (comunemente vengono usati processori da Celeron a salire fino a i7 o addirittura i9), permette una grande flessibilità: il sistema Computer-Based, infatti, può essere cucito come un abito sartoriale attorno all’applicazione, scegliendo camere con sensori anche molto risoluti, illuminatori di qualsiasi genere (molto spesso custom) e obiettivi estremamente performanti e specifici.

In optics, the distance from the middle of the lens to its focal point. Light rays run in parallel to one another, while lenses distort light rays: a convex lens (the type that is thicker in the centre than at the edges) brings them closer together and a concave lens (the type that is thinner in the centre) forces them apart. Cameras use convex lenses to bring the light rays together to a point where they converge and the image is in focus: this is where the film or light sensitive diode goes. The more convex (or thicker) the lens, the more severely the light rays are bent and the shorter the focal length (conversely, the thinner the lens the longer the focal length). Different focal lengths create different kinds of image effects. Lenses with very short focal lengths (or wide angle lenses) allow more of the picture to be seen and emphasize foreground elements, whereas lenses with very long focal lengths (or telephoto lenses) allow less of the picture to be seen and emphasize background elements which appear to be magnified. These different effects are dramatically illustrated by a technique used in feature films called a Hitchcock zoom, where the camera tracks out at the same time as it zooms in (or vice versa), an effect used in the film Vertigo (1958).

In generale un sistema di visione artificiale è un sistema composto da una o più telecamere, in grado di analizzare un’immagine. Quando ci troviamo davanti ad una macchina automatica, è facile capire quanto sia importante il sistema di visione: si tratta, infatti, dell’occhio del sistema automatico, che comunica con il cervello della macchina (PLC) per dire agli arti (robot) come comportarsi. Il sistema di visione è quindi vitale quando vogliamo una macchina flessibile e in grado, per quanto possibile, di prendere decisioni.

Pensiamo ad esempio ad una linea di produzione: per scartare un pezzo non conforme necessita di un occhio, opportunamente programmato, in grado di definire se il pezzo da analizzare è conforme o meno alle specifiche; allo stesso modo, un robot necessita di un occhio che indichi dove si trova precisamente il pezzo da prendere.
