High-energy collisions of atomic nuclei provide a unique opportunity to recreate the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the laboratory, for a brief moment. The QGP is a fundamental, extremely hot form of nuclear matter in which protons and neutrons dissolve into quarks and gluons. It filled the early universe in the first few microseconds after the Big Bang. Scientists use collisions of heavy ions (particles with an electrical charge) to produce large numbers of the heavy charm and bottom quarks. These quarks are excellent probes of QGP formation. Specifically, the recombination of freely moving charm and bottom quarks facilitates the production of Bc mesons—particles made of an equal number of quarks and antiquarks—when the QGP decays.

Da questo effetto di moltiplicazione della focale discendono benefici e problemi, com’è facile intuire. Infatti nei teleobiettivi il fattore crop è considerato un vantaggio, poiché ti avvicini all’azione: un 200mm, infatti, montato su una fotocamera Canon ha una lunghezza focale effettiva di 320mm (200 x 1,6) che può essere di aiuto in caso di fotografie sportive e naturalistiche.

In fotografia, la lunghezza focale è la distanza, espressa in millimetri, tra il centro ottico dell’obiettivo e  il sensore (nella  fotocamera digitale) o il piano pellicola (nel caso di fotocamera analogica)

A QGP formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions only lasts for a short time before disintegrating into thousands of particles that can be observed in detectors. These detectors track signatures—the signals produced by specific types of particles. The discovery and study of QGP formation in heavy-ion experiments requires signatures that do not occur in other types of collisions, such as proton-proton collisions.

Come si può facilmente intuire, più piccolo il sensore e maggiore sarà l’effetto di “allungamento apparente della lunghezza focale. Per determinare di quanto ammonta questo allungamento occorre moltiplicare la lunghezza focale dell’obiettivo per un numero, definito fattore di moltiplicazione  (o crop) che varia in base alla grandezza del sensore utilizzato.

Dati questi presupposti, si possono finalmente capire le categorie di obiettivi, riferite alla pellicola o al full-frame:

Obiettivi di focale corta vengono impiegati per fotografare oggetti vicini oppure per abbracciare un’ampia porzione di spazio; mentre obiettivi più lunghi vengono utilizzati per avvicinare soggetti distanti oppure per isolare un soggetto dal contesto.

The researchers used realistic spectra of charm and bottom quarks, computed from their diffusion through the QGP, to evaluate their recombination processes. The results show a large enhancement of the Bc yield in collisions of lead (Pb) nuclei, relative to that in proton collisions. The largest effect is predicted for slow-moving Bc mesons in “head-on” collisions of the Pb nuclei, where a large QGP fireball with appreciable numbers of charm and bottom quarks is formed.

Quando si inizia a praticare la fotografia seriamente, si cominciano a sentire, parlando con altri fotografi o leggendo libri sull’argomento, termini tecnici, che all’inizio possono sembrare un pò complessi. Uno di questi è la “lunghezza focale” espressa solitamente in millimetri (mm). Tale termine seppur sia strettamente correlato allo zoom o ingrandimento dell’immagine,  è molto importante per tantissimi altri fattori. In questo tutorial, cercherò di spiegare, questo concetto fondamentale.

Viceversa, con il grandangolo il fattore di crop è considerato uno svantaggio, in quanto trasforma la lunghezza focale di un 17mm, per esempio, in quella effettiva di un 28mm (17 x 1,6), riducendo di molto l’angolo di campo. Un obiettivo del genere è molto limitativo per i paesaggi! E’ vero, esistono ottiche molto corte per l’APS-C, tipo il Canon 10-22 o il Sigma 10-20 ma costano e comunque una full frame offre anche altri vantaggi, tipo la qualità d’immagine, non solo quello che i grandangolari restano tali!

(Il fattore crop (N)x si ottiene dividendo la diagonale del fotogramma 24*36 per la diagonale del sensore in uso [43,3/d])

Dando una spiegazione geometrica, l’aumento della lunghezza focale determina, in realtà, una riduzione dell’ angolo di campo,  ossia della porzione di spazio inquadrata dall’obiettivo. Questa riduzione del frame dell’immagine ce la fa apparire più grande.

Researchers from the HEFTY Topical Collaboration investigated the recombination of charm and bottom quarks into Bc mesons in the QGP. They have developed a transport model that simulates the kinetics of heavy-quark bound states through the expanding QGP fireball formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Previous research has successfully used this model to describe the production of charm-anticharm and bottom-antibottom bound states, and thus can provide predictions for Bc particles (charm-antibottom bound states).

In this study, researchers carried out theoretical simulations of charm and bottom quarks diffusing through the QGP. They found that the recombination of these quarks enhances the production of Bc mesons. This mechanism does not occur in proton-proton collisions and thus can serve as a clean signature of QGP formation.

A parità di dimensione del sensore, maggiore è la lunghezza focale, (ossi la distanza della lente dal sensore) maggiore sarà l’ingrandimento (o rapporto di produzione) dell’immagine.

A parità di distanza e di lunghezza focale, al diminuire della dimensione del sensore normale (24*36) l’angolo di campo diminuisce (in altre parole è come se la lunghezza focale aumentasse),

Stando a quanto detto prima, è chiaro che se non si usa un sensore full-frame, ma uno più piccolo come l’APS-C (vedi l’immagine in alto a destra),  l’obiettivo inquadrerà una porzione del soggetto più piccola. In altre parole è come se la lunghezza focale fosse più estesa. Nell’esempio in figura ,il 50 mm si comporta come se fosse un 75-80 mm. Quindi in sintesi, quando si scatta un fotocamere che montano sensori APS-C, bisogna sempre fare due conticini per capire, a quale lunghezza focale si sta fotografando.

The focal length of a lens is the optical distance (usually measured in mm) from the point where the light meets inside the lens to the camera's sensor.

Per esempio, se utilizzassi un obiettivo 50mm su una reflex Nikon DX (cioè crop), questo sarebbe in realtà un 75mm (ho moltiplicato per 1.5) e quindi sarebbe già un teleobiettivo. Se volessi simulare l’obiettivo normale, che è anche il più classico e storico usato nella street-photography, allora dovrei usare un 33mm che mi porterebbe a circa 49mm. Poiché però non esiste, il più vicino è il 35mm.
