Using a ring light for the first time could be a little jarring. You now have this bright light aimed at your eyes while you’re on Zoom. When setting up your light, you want to make sure you’re not blown out (or too washed out).

Before going into your meeting, check your Zoom video preview settings. Play around with the ring light’s brightness and make sure it’s enhancing your features rather than making you look like too bright. Turn off any outside lights that you have on, as your light will be enough. This will also help your camera focus more on your face.

Infrared film ‘sees’ the object because the Sun (or some other light source) shines infrared light on it and it is reflected or absorbed by the object. You could say that this reflecting or absorbing of infrared helps to determine the object’s ‘color’ – its color being a combination of red, green, blue, and infrared!

Lighting is a key component not only for content creators but also for those work-from-home meetings. If you plan on being in front of your computer’s webcam for an interview, you’ll definitely want a light to add some clarity. The major difference between an LED light and a ring light is mainly the shape. LED lights will tend to have a more rectangular shape, whereas Ring lights will be in the shape of a ring.

Ring lights can be used for a variety of purposes in photography and videography. They also provide plenty of light for other professional uses. Here are some of the most common uses and considerations for the best ring light use.

This second image was taken with special film that can detect invisible infrared waves. This is a false-color image, just like the one of the cat. False-color infrared images of the Earth frequently use a color scheme like the one shown here, where infrared light is mapped to the visible color of red. This means that everything in this image that appears red is giving off or reflecting infrared light. This makes vegetation like grass and trees appear to be red. The visible light waves drawn on this picture are green, and the infrared ones are darker red.

We know, from looking at an infrared image of a cat, that many things emit infrared light. But many things also reflect infrared light, particularly near infrared light. Near infrared radiation is not related to the temperature of the object being photographed – unless the object is very, very hot.

If you’re using constant light, you can easily adjust the power and your distance from the subject. This will get you your desired effect before clicking your shutter. If you’re using a flash version, you can do several test shots to determine the changes that you need to make. Think: distance and light strength.

However, keep in mind that if you’re making a constant ring light, you’ll need to brush up on bulb types and use the right materials. That way your DIY version will be safe for repeated and prolonged use.

Some ring lights can plug directly into your computer and some can be plugged into the wall. Find out which one you prefer. A light with a wall plug frees up your USB ports for more peripherals. Once you use your ring light for the first time, you’ll never go back.

For macro photography, these lights offer a slightly more front-focused lighting compared to a lightbox. Simultaneously, they distribute light around a small subject well enough to hide shadows and bring out more detail. With the right color temperature, a ring light can supplement natural light seamlessly. Kits are commonly used for floral and insect photography.

Far infrared waves are thermal. In other words, we experience this type of infrared radiation every day in the form of heat! The heat that we feel from sunlight, a fire, a radiator or a warm sidewalk is infrared. The temperature-sensitive nerve endings in our skin can detect the difference between inside body temperature and outside skin temperature. Infrared light is even used to heat food sometimes – special lamps that emit thermal infrared waves are often used in fast food restaurants!

Another thing to know: the power and size of the ring light does make a difference. If you want visible catch light on your subject’s eyes for portrait photography, you’ll need a much bigger ring light. However, smaller ring lights will give you the same effect if you’re going to do a lot of close ups. As for the power, it’s usually best to get one that has a dimmer. You will be able to easily adjust the power depending on the distance between your ring light and your subject.

You can use clip-on selfie ring lights even when recording with a cell phone or tablet, making them a great inexpensive and portable option.

This is an infrared image of the Earth taken by the GOES 6 satellite in 1986. A scientist used temperatures to determine which parts of the image were from clouds and which were land and sea. Based on these temperature differences, he colored each separately using 256 colors, giving the image a realistic appearance. Why use the infrared to image the Earth? While it is easier to distinguish clouds from land in the visible range, there is more detail in the clouds in the infrared. This is great for studying cloud structure. For instance, note that darker clouds are warmer, while lighter clouds are cooler. Southeast of the Galapagos, just west of the coast of South America, there is a place where you can distinctly see multiple layers of clouds, with the warmer clouds at lower altitudes, closer to the ocean that’s warming them.

Many things besides people and animals emit infrared light – the Earth, the Sun, and far away things like stars and galaxies do also! For a view from Earth orbit, whether we are looking out into space or down at Earth, we can use instruments on board satellites.

Additionally, LED lights are designed more for videography and product showcases. LED lights also tend to be a little more expensive than ring lights. The best thing about a ring light is that it has space for your camera to allow you to shoot through it. The shape of a ring light is designed to be used more for capturing faces. If you plan on having a ton of in-home meetings and interviews, or starting your own TikTok account, go with a ring light. However, if you plan on starting a YouTube channel, a Twitch channel or just want a wider light source, an LED light might be best.

Photographers use ring lights for other types of creative lighting setups that don’t necessarily require you to shoot through it. Just take a look at this video from Daniel Norton for AdoramaTV:

A ring light is a simple lighting tool that is commonly used for beauty shots, portraits, and macro photography. It features a number of small bulbs forming a circle or just one circular fluorescent bulb. When used in photography, it creates an attractive catch light on a subject’s eyes. At the same time, it emits even, diffused lighting, similar to a softbox, that helps eliminate shadows. You can position this light in front of the subject, with the camera situated in the middle of the circle.

A constant ring light is easier to adjust, because what you see is what you get as far as power and quality of light. Strobe ring lights that flash with every click of the shutter can help you save power, but may involve a steeper learning curve.

Lastly, take note of the color temperature. Even if you decide to use color gels to temporarily create more fun colors with the light, you’ll want  a natural default color. Ring lights are often best in fluorescent, warm white, or even stark white lighting — instead of warm yellow or bright white.

Once your subject is ready, simply place the ring light in front of your camera. Whether you’re using a camera phone or a more professional camera — like the Sony Alpha a7 IV, Panasonic Lumix GH6, and Canon EOS R5 — make sure you position the lens right in the center of it so you get even lighting on your subject every time. Use a clip or even a stand or tripod to hold your camera and ring light in place.

Because ring light kits are often very affordable, they’re a great choice for content creators who maintain a YouTube channel or do live streams on TikTok, Twitch, and other platforms. If you’ve ever wondered why someone looks well-lit even when using a webcam, they’re probably using a ring light. The best ring lights are arguably the top lighting option for YouTube videos, especially for vloggers and product reviewers.

Ring lights can be purchased as existing kits and fixtures, but there are also many tutorials on how to make your own DIY ring light. Ring lights are generally available in two formats: strobe and constant. Strobes are usually used for still images, while constant lights are the best ring lights for video content creators.

Humans may not be able to see infrared light, but did you know that snakes in the pit viper family, like rattlesnakes, have sensory “pits”, which are used to image infrared light? This allows the snake to detect warm blooded animals, even in dark burrows! Snakes with 2 sensory pits are even thought to have some depth perception in the infrared! (Thanks to NASA’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center for help with the text in this section.)

Other satellites, like the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) look up into space and measure the infrared light coming from things like large clouds of dust and gas, stars, and galaxies!Satellites like GOES 6 and Landsat 7 look at the Earth. Special sensors, like those aboard the Landsat 7 satellite, record data about the amount of infrared light reflected or emitted from the Earth’s surface.

Infrared light lies between the visible and microwave portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared light has a range of wavelengths, just like visible light has wavelengths that range from red light to violet. “Near infrared” light is closest in wavelength to visible light and “far infrared” is closer to the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The longer, far infrared wavelengths are about the size of a pin head and the shorter, near infrared ones are the size of cells, or are microscopic.

Since the primary source of infrared radiation is heat or thermal radiation, any object which has a temperature radiates in the infrared. Even objects that we think of as being very cold, such as an ice cube, emit infrared. When an object is not quite hot enough to radiate visible light, it will emit most of its energy in the infrared. For example, hot charcoal may not give off light but it does emit infrared radiation which we feel as heat. The warmer the object, the more infrared radiation it emits.

Professionals in portrait photography absolutely love these lights. They offer more diffused, soft light on the subject, while reducing the appearance of harsh shadows. Those functions alone make this a popular lighting choice for close-up portraiture. Ring lights can make your subject “pop” without washing out or changing the contours of the face in a way uneven lighting would. That makes these lights the perfect selection for portraits and selfies.

This is an image of Phoenix, Arizona showing the near infrared data collected by the Landsat 5 satellite. The light areas are areas with high reflectance of near infrared waves. The dark areas show little reflectance. What do you think the black grid lines in the lower right of this image represent?

Humans, at normal body temperature, radiate most strongly in the infrared at a wavelength of about 10 microns. (A micron is the term commonly used in astronomy for a micrometer or one millionth of a meter.) This image ( which is courtesy of the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at CalTech), shows a man holding up a lighted match! Which parts of this image do you think have the warmest temperature? How does the temperature of this man’s glasses compare to the temperature of his hand?

Shorter, near infrared waves are not hot at all – in fact you cannot even feel them. These shorter wavelengths are the ones used by your TV’s remote control.

To make infrared pictures like the one above, we can use special cameras and film that detect differences in temperature, and then assign different brightnesses or false colors to them. This provides a picture that our eyes can interpret. The image at the left (courtesy of SE-IR Corporation, Goleta, CA) shows a cat in the infrared. The orange areas are the warmest and the white-blue areas are the coldest. This image gives us a different view of a familiar animal as well as information that we could not get from a visible light picture.

This image of a building with a tree and grass shows how Chlorophyll in plants reflect near infrared waves along with visible light waves. Even though we can’t see the infrared waves, they are always there. The visible light waves drawn on this picture are green, and the infrared ones are pale red.

You’ll know if a model is facing a ring light by the appearance of circular catch lights (or eye lights) in the subject’s eyes. These spectacular highlights instantly make the portrait more attractive and engaging, as they instantly draw the viewer’s attention.

Virtually every serious makeup artist on YouTube uses a ring light kit for makeup tutorials. These lights instantly enhance facial features and help show the true colors of the skin as well as the products. Artists simply place their makeup ring light in front of their cameras (or camera phone) and record away. Makeup artists also use ring lights while preparing models and brides for photoshoots.

This image shows the infrared data (appearing as red) composited with visible light data at the blue and green wavelengths. If near infrared is reflected off of healthy vegetation, what do you think the red square shaped areas are in the lower left of the image?
