Our DR-SP3W recessed LED spotlights with 3W output in warm white complement our complete LED sets and are ideal for illuminating our patio canopies. The compact lights for indoor and outdoor use are supplied with a 5 metre connection cable.
WARNING: The recessed LED spotlights may only be connected to an S-Polylight LED power controller with 12V output voltage using the connection cables supplied. It is not recommended to use a different 12 V power supply unit for the power supply. Never connect the spotlights directly to a 230V line. There is a danger to life. Electrical connections should only be made by qualified personnel.
A related portrait lighting technique, named after the infamous artist himself, is Rembrandt Lighting. Essentially, one side of the face is illuminated with the other in fairly deep shadow less a small triangle under the eye on the cheek. It’s still popular today as it achieves a sort of dramatic affect:
Each recessed spotlight is supplied with a 5 metre connection cable, which has a small white plug on one end for connection to the HUB of the LED power controller for the power supply. On the other side is a round, black plug contact with an external thread. That is used for the plug-in screw connection with the LED spotlight. This should be taken into account in advance when laying the cables. The strong outer insulation protects the two conductors from damage, but care should be taken when laying the cable to ensure that it is not pulled over sharp edges, for example the usually sharp-edged holes in the aluminium of patio roofs. Stud frame profiles in drywall construction and pointed drywall screws can also damage the insulation and impair the function of the LED light. Special care should therefore be taken here.

Our S-Polylight recessed LED spotlights with 3W output are suitable for extending our complete sets to connect up to 12 recessed spotlights to one LED power controller. The 5 metre long connection cable is pre-assembled and is connected to the HUB of the controller via a simple plug connection. The brightness of a single spotlight is 190 lumens and can be reduced by dimming if required. With a colour temperature of 3000 Kelvin, the compact LED lights shine in a pleasant warm white, contributing to cosy lighting both indoors and outdoors. The high-quality housing is made of painted aluminium and is available in a choice of anthracite (RAL 7016), silver or white. At 36mm, the outer diameter of the mini recessed spotlight is around half that of conventional recessed spotlights. The hole diameter required for installation is just 28mm and with a shallow installation depth of 29mm, the small LED spotlight can also be easily installed in suspended ceilings with a shallow depth.

I’ve saved this as a sort of after thought, as I didn’t bother finding an illustration example of this lighting technique as it’s pretty much used for most portrait shots you’ve already seen as it gives very “even looking” results. The last part of this article even talks about why it may have fallen out of favor due to its formulaic or artificial result that doesn’t quite reflect nature. That said, it’s a standard and not going away, so it’s definitely worthwhile to understand the basics of how it works.

Light from below in a night scene can imply a sense of horror or evil. Whether this light is coming from a fire, theatre light, or computer screen, we tend to associate this effect with trouble being just around the corner. But it can also be used in more nuanced ways like in this very creative illustration:
Also called edge lighting or backlighting, the notable result of this lighting technique is a sort of fringe of highlight alongside the edge of the subject. If you examine the top illustration I did for this article, you can see I placed a bit of rim light on my subject’s back of neck, with the idea that the light was coming through on that side.

The S-Polylight DR-SP3W recessed LED spotlights are dimmable LED spotlights with an output of 3 watts. The supply voltage of 12 volts DC is provided by the LED power controller, which can be used to control up to 12 lights simultaneously. This also has a radio receiver and a radio remote control for convenient switching and dimming of the lights. Neither of these is included with the individual spotlights, so they are primarily intended as an addition to our complete sets or for putting together your own set. The permanently installed LEDs with a beam angle of 45 degrees illuminate with a maximum brightness of 190 lumens, which corresponds to 63 lumens per watt. However, the brightness can be dimmed if required. This is made possible by the use of particularly high-quality 5050 SMD LEDs. They are characterised by very good colour rendering with a CRI of > 80 Ra and flicker-free illumination.
The 3W outdoor LED recessed spotlights with high-quality aluminium housing are available in anthracite, silver and white.
Once the LED spotlights have been connected to the connection cable and inserted into the hole provided, the small two-pole plugs can be plugged into the HUB of the LED power controller. This allows up to 6 LED spots to be connected on both sides, so that a maximum of 12 spots can be connected and controlled with one controller. A small pin on the underside of the plug ensures that it cannot be connected incorrectly. Finally, the mains plug can be plugged into the socket provided. Especially with very large patio covers with a width of 10 metres or more, the 5 metre connection cable supplied may be too short, meaning that not all spots can be connected to the LED power controller. In this case, optional 5 metre extension cables are available, which increase the total length of the connection cable to 10 metres. These are simply inserted through the plug-in screw connection on both sides between the LED spot and the original connection cable.
A fill light can be towards a colored reflective surface and the hue of the reflected fill lighting will take on that of which is being reflected — think of light bouncing off of a reflective gel material on to the subject.

There’s a way to draw or paint a simulated rim light effect manually which is very nicely exemplified in this video by Loish:

NOTE: The plug-in screw connection, between the short connection cable of the recessed spotlight and the connection cable supplied, has a notch on the bottom side of the plug to prevent the poles from being swapped. Only turn the plastic screw connection clockwise by hand to ensure a dust and splash-proof cable connection.
In order to look at the following lighting techniques, a basic grasp of form principles should be understood. Since this post is inspired by James Gurney’s book, it only seems to make sense to defer to his blog post on this prerequisite background on Light and Form.
Contre Jour — this is a sort of backlighting where the subject almost blocks the light such that the light appears to explode from all sides of the subject:

Connecting the recessed spotlights is very simple. Thanks to pre-assembled cables with different plugs, incorrect connection is impossible. Neither a screwdriver nor a soldering iron is required for connection. The short connection cable on the LED spot is soldered and additionally secured and sealed with a special resin. This prevents the solder contact from tearing due to tensile stress and offers a high level of protection against dust and splash water. With that, the luminaires achieve protection class IP65. To connect the recessed spotlight to the HUB of the LED power controller, a connection cable with a length of 5 metres is included in the scope of delivery and is therefore more than sufficient for most areas of application.
Most people prefer to draw or paint from locations where the light strikes the form sideways, reasoning that they can get the form to turn better with more of a shadow side…But they are missing something wonderful! Frontal lighting does tend to flatten form, but it gives power to the two-dimensional design instead. It gives your whole picture a striking postery impact.
NOTE: The two clamping brackets have a high clamping force, so care should be taken not to pinch your fingers when opening the brackets.
I’ve been reading the seminal book on color and light for artists by James Gurney: Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter, and it has inspired me to do a post on lighting techniques as used in illustration — I hope you enjoy!
A spotlight effect can be used to effectively put focus on your composition’s focal point. For example, Malika Favre uses this lighting arrangement quite nicely to dramatically cast light on her protagonist in this Gotham City like night scene:
Our S-Polylight LED spotlights are recessed spotlights with clamping brackets that are perfect for installation in the rafters of patio roofs due to their very small installation dimensions. The visually appealing light sources can also be used very well in drywall construction, for example as ceiling or staircase lighting. Holes with a diameter of 28mm are required for installation. For this, we recommend our 28mm hole saw made of high-quality bi-metal. It is equally suitable for drywall materials and light metals such as aluminium.
Essentially, you start with a dark room and a subject, add a primary light from in front and possibly slight angle. This is the key light. Now you add a light from the side, the fill light, also illuminating the subject, often with lower strength then the key light. It’s main job is to balance the stronger key light’s shaded surfaces, eliminating any dramatic cast shadows. Finally, the back light is placed from behind and, sometimes, slightly to one side or the other of the subject, with the goal of producing a very slight edge highlight to the subject to distinguish from the background from the wikipedia entry:
Here are some examples he provides on the above linked blog post. It creates an opposite effect to rim lighting (which we’ll soon discuss)—instead of an edge highlight, you get an edge shadow as can be seen in the following:
Jeremy Booth has many more illustrations in this vector noir style well worth perusing—start with his most recent GQ Life Cover in the same vain.
If you’re in to film or photography, I’m sure this is nothing new to you. But if you’re coming from more of a drawing or illustration background, some of these lighting techniques just may help you to bring your images to life!

Color and Light has some interesting conclusions about reflected light, specifically with regard to outdoor scenes given the sun and sky (warm and cool respectively):
The color of the shadow is the sum of all the sources of reflected illumination, combined with the local color of the object itself.
Our mini recessed spotlights live up to their name. They have very compact dimensions with an installation diameter of 28mm and an installation depth of 29mm. The outer diameter of 36mm is also very discreet. The housing is made of a high-quality aluminium alloy, which is then finished with a scratch-resistant paint. The colours available are anthracite grey (RAL 7016), silver and white. This means that the small recessed spotlights are also perfectly colour-coordinated with our anthracite grey or white patio roofs.
Lighting is a complicated topic and I’ve erred on the side of brevity, so here are some resources I found useful in case you’d like to go deeper:

Thanks to their very compact dimensions, the high-quality recessed spotlights are perfect for integrating into the roof struts of our patio roofs to illuminate them with pleasant, warm white light at dusk. As a dust and splash-proof recessed spotlight with IP65 protection, there are virtually no limits to its use in protected outdoor areas. The cabling can be completely concealed within the struts. Even the optionally available LED power controller, to which the spotlights are connected, is very easily concealed behind the wall-side cover panels due to its small dimensions.
