Doxo tracks payments to 45 different biller categories, and doxoINSIGHTS highlights the 10 most common: utilities (water, electric, gas and waste), cable and phone, mobile phone, auto loans, auto insurance, life insurance, health insurance, alarm and security, rent and mortgage. All data is anonymized and aggregated prior to analysis in order to protect doxo users’ privacy.

Newark, in Wayne County, fell just below Geneva as the 224th most expensive place to live in New York. Household bills in Newark are $1,881 per month, which is 11% lower than the national average. Newark residents spend 39% of their annual income of $58,595 on the most common bills.

Penn Yan, in Yates County, is one of the least expensive places to live in New York, coming in at 245th. Household bills in the village are $1,733 per month, which is 18% below the national average. Residents there spend 33% of their yearly income of $62,159 on the most common bills.

“When thinking about a move, the cost of living is a crucial factor, and the Finger Lakes region shines brightly compared to surrounding options,” Gerber wrote. “Imagine living in a place where your dollar stretches further, and life’s essentials don’t break the bank. According to BestPlaces.net, the cost of living here is not just below the national average; it’s significantly lower, making it an economical yet enriching place to call home.”

The Finger Lakes is among the most affordable housing markets in the nation, the Chamber also notes: “Whether you are buying or renting, the area features a range of options from stately manors to lakeside cottages that are cheaper than many comparable metropolitan areas.”

Seneca Falls also falls way down Doxo’s list for New York, coming in even lower than Penn Yan at 257th. Household bills there are $1,645 a month, which is 33% below the national average. Residents in Seneca Falls spend 35% of their yearly income of $56,365 on the most common bills.

Staining: Bright-field microscopy is often used with stained specimens to enhance contrast. Stains can selectively bind to cellular structures or components, making them more visible under the microscope.

According to its website, doxo.com, “doxo’s vast amount of data gives a uniquely accurate perspective into what households are actually paying for their bills, and provides a sound basis for constructing an accurate gauge of relative differences in the cost of the most common monthly bills across America.”

Bright-field microscopy is widely used in biology, medicine, and materials science for the examination of a variety of specimens, including cells, tissues, microorganisms, and thin sections of materials.

Just down the road, Canandaigua ranked as New York’s 187th most expensive city. Household bills are $2,298 per month, which is 8% higher than the national average. Residents in that city spend 37% of their income, which averages $75,481 a year on the bills listed above.

In New York, as one would expect, it is much more expensive to live downstate than upstate. Finger Lakes communities ranked near the bottom, with the exception of Canandaigua, which came in at 187th.

The data for Geneva, ranked as New York’s 226th most expensive city, is: Household bills, $1,884 a month, which is 11% lower than the U.S. average. Genevans typically spend 32% of their income, which averages $71,052, on mortgage/rent, utilities, auto payment, auto insurance, health insurance, cable and satellite, life insurance, mobile phone and alarm and security.

Brightfield refers to a type of microscopy and imaging technique in which the specimen is illuminated with a white light source, and the image is observed or captured against a bright background. In a bright-field microscope, the specimen appears darker against a bright background, providing high contrast for transparent or lightly stained samples.

Doxo found the average U.S. household spends $2,046 per month on the most common bills. The most expensive state to live in was Hawaii and the least expensive was West Virginia.

Doxo is a U.S. bill-pay service; its research arm, doxoINSIGHTS, is designed to provide the best possible look into the average American household’s monthly bills, and relies on anonymized data from its 10 million customers paying more than 120,000 billers.

While we might be feeling the pinch when it comes to the cost of things these days, it could be worse; and it is, for those living in other parts of New York.

The Seneca County Chamber of Commence estimates that for someone to have the same quality of life in New York City, he or she would have to earn more than twice that: $114,000.

Cloudy. Some light rain will fall throughout the day. Temps nearly steady in the upper 30s. Winds light and variable. Chance of rain 90%..

Objective lenses: Bright-field microscopes typically use a series of objective lenses with different magnifications to observe specimens at varying levels of detail.

Bright-field microscopy is a common and versatile technique, but it may have limitations in imaging transparent or low-contrast specimens. Other microscopy techniques, such as phase contrast, differential interference contrast (DIC), or dark-field microscopy, are often employed to enhance the visibility of certain structures or features that may be less apparent in traditional bright-field imaging.

That is according to doxoINSIGHTS, a company that millions of people contract with to manage their bill payments. It analyzed more than 4,000 cities, counties and towns across the country and compared the costs of living. The data comes from information collected in 2023.

Dundee Fresh Grocery Inc. distributes fresh produce to residents at the village barns. The organization plans to open a nonprofit grocery store early next year, giving residents another lower-cost option when it comes to buying food.

Contrast mechanism: Contrast in bright-field microscopy is generated by differences in light absorption and refractive index within the specimen. Dense or strongly absorbing areas appear darker, while less dense or more transparent regions appear brighter.

“It is no coincidence that the Finger Lakes region is experiencing growth in its millennial population at a rate faster than the national average,” the Chamber indicated on its webpage. “Aside from its top colleges and universities, the area’s downtown revitalization projects, cultural amenities and proximity to major cities all combine to provide an ideal opportunity to be part of a connected community.”

Illumination: In bright-field microscopy, the entire specimen is illuminated with a broad, uniform light source. This can be achieved using a halogen lamp or similar white light source.
