I quickly googled "Air Quality Canada" and right away I see maps and pictures of the fires out west. Even though I didn't smell anything in Ontario yesterday, supposedly the smoke and scent was wafting over here. So what can be done? Well, it depends on how much smoke is in the area. There are different types and grades of filters that can be put into the air handling units. Then there are different technologies that can be utilized, such as #ionization, #uvc, #ozone to name a few. Some of these can be harmful and if not installed properly, can destroy the HVAC system. So be careful and do your homework One technology that Siemens has backed is soft-ionization. Our partnered product improves filtration and is ASHRAE UL 2998 certified for ZERO ozone emissions and can be used both in the AHU's and in the rooms. For wildfire micro-particle mitigation, I would recommend starting with a system for the AHU's. This will decrease particle transmission into the building significantly as they will be caught by the filters. Lets talk about the benefits to this set up tomorrow... In the meantime, lets connect, follow me or message me and I'd be happy to tell you more. Siemens GPS Air CTV News #wildfiresmokemitigation #canadianwildfires

These results do not surprise me. Brokers and freight forwarders are frustrated with CARM's ongoing delays. We invest tremendous amounts of time and money to prepare ourselves and our clients, only to face repeated postponements. It's disheartening to feel like we're being made to look foolish with each delay. There is a clear need for more transparency and better planning from CBSA to avoid these situations in the future.
🌱 "Learn from the Start" – this takeaway from the latest episode of Grow Sell and Retire Podcast with Melanie Dulbecco truly hit home for me! 🌱 As a former business owner, I’ve seen the incredible value of learning from those who’ve already walked the path ahead of me. You will never regret taking the time to make those key connections and build those lasting relationships 🤝 Ask questions, contribute and engage. Now a business mentor, I usually hear: "I can't afford to take time away from my already busy work schedule, to network and initiate new connections" I understand. Believe me, I've been there. But think about this: If you always do things the same way. How can you expect a different result? If you’re on the path of growth, surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you, the energy you get from that will be insane 🚀 If you want a helping hand to take that leap of faith to step back and focus, I'd love to hear from you. #BusinessMentor #Leadership #GrowthMindset #Mentorship

Nothing quite roils the rank-and-file workforce like the yesteryear boss showing up suddenly professing to possess all the answers. It doesn’t matter that their day has passed, or that the modern complexion of the environment – in this case, the realms of politics and business – have been altered by, say, trifling things like a pandemic or the arrival of the internet. We got a good glimpse of this syndrome last Monday (June 10) when two iconic political figures, now in post-political private sector roles, took turns to tell their successors what success might look like. Just before they did so, this modern complexion was laid before the Business Council of British Columbia (BCBC) summit by its policy vice-president, David Williams, whose early-day presentation made many feel like heading back to bed and curling into a fetal position. Again, trifling things: that we’re 48th among North American states and provinces in GDP per capita (“We’re Kentucky,” Williams said). That we're in a slide and maybe by 2028 we’re back at 2018 levels. That there is scant private-sector job growth; for every one there are 5.5 new public servants in B.C., compared to 0.6 in the rest of Canada. That we are servicing record mortgage debt: 8.2 per cent, including 5.4 per cent in interest alone, the highest burden since 1996. That before long, the contribution to the economy from the construction of megaprojects – Site C, Trans Mountain pipeline, LNG – will run its course. That then, well … who knows how bad it’ll be, but it’ll be bad. As the day wore on, two former bosses dropped by – both named Clark, a woman named Christy and a man named Glen, one to the right, one to the left. Neither former B.C. premier had ever lost an election, but both had lost the power to govern – Glen through a resignation in some scandal in 1999 (he was acquitted of breach of trust, but the damage to him was done), Christy through a failure to negotiate with the Greens to secure government in 2017, opening the door for the NDP’s John Horgan to do so, even though she’d won more seats than him. They came along for two keynote speeches and fireside chats with little more than four months to the next provincial election, and each brought a basket of prescriptions for their kinfolk. But it would be a stretch to say the ex-leaders sketched out feasible remedies. #britishcolumbia #politics #economics #leadership #fetalposition https://lnkd.in/gAzrjgqW

This is devastation! Canfor is closing both the Plateau (Vanderhoof) and Fort St. John sawmills, resulting in 500 job losses. This will have a devastating impact on their families and the surrounding communities. Stolberg Engineering designed the massive three-line Canfor Plateau mill in 2004, which was among the largest in North America at the time. Both the Plateau and Fort St. John mills were significant, creating prosperity and value for their stakeholders. - I’ll add the nameplate details and peak output later in the comments for reference. The term "major closures" doesn’t fully capture the wide-ranging impact of sawmill shutdowns in rural communities. Beyond job losses, these closures will impact first nations, decimate businesses, lower funding for community services, declining home values, and weakened social ties. If you want to see how poor government policy can affect an industry to make it from being the global leader in technology to facing rapid decline, just look at what's happening in British Columbia. It’s a clear example of how quickly a thriving sector can deteriorate. Unfortunately, the Government of British Columbia ministers seem to be doing nothing, watching the devastation unfold without taking action. There's been no support for the industry or measures to aid or address the tariffs, increase fiber supply, or reduce complex regulations.

There are five major auto manufacturers in Ontario, with hundreds of additional parts suppliers. With the latest announcement of a Honda EV battery plant coming to Ontario, the industrial strategy around creating an EV battery and car assembly hub is taking shape. These are the sustainable jobs of the future. I argued on CTV News Power Play that with billions of public dollars being invested there must be strings attached. We need good, fairly paid union jobs. And we need companies to make explicit commitments to respect the rights of their workers to organize. Only when public investments come with robust conditions will we build the kinds of thriving communities we want to live in.
O Canada ... how your electrical distribution landscape has evolved!! And seemingly the US isn't too far behind. 98% of the Canadian electrical distribution business is now "controlled" by the national chains and 1 marketing group. What could this mean for manufacturers? For reps? What could each party do? Is the US market, which is experiencing rapid consolidation with the "middle" being taken out (and I commented on the latest Sonepar USA acquisition of Echo Electric Supply today on ElectricalTrends), going to follow the Canadian market? Take a read, https://lnkd.in/geDrSu-3, and share your thoughts (or ponder within your company or give me a call and we can share thoughts) If you're a manufacturer and not "under the umbrella", what to do? And thank you to John Kerr from Canadian Electrical Wholesaler for sharing his local expertise. #electricaltrends #channelmkt #canadianelectricalwholesaler #electricaldistribution #sonepar #canada

Ontario Welcomes Over $3.2 Million Manufacturing Investment M.I.S. Electronics Inc. will create 11 new, good-paying jobs in Richmond Hill NEWS November 8, 2024 RICHMOND HILL — The Ontario government is supporting an investment of more than $3.2 million by M.I.S. Electronics Inc. to boost local manufacturing and create 11 new, good-paying jobs in Richmond Hill. The funding was announced today by Daisy Wai, Member of Provincial Parliament for Richmond Hill alongside Saeid Mohmedi, Chief Executive Officer of M.I.S. Electronics Inc. "Our government is building a strong Ontario and creating the conditions for a strong economy by supporting key investments in our community," said MPP Wai. "M.I.S. Electronics' investment will boost the local manufacturing sector and create more good-paying jobs for workers and families in Richmond Hill." With this investment, M.I.S. Electronics will replace outdated machinery with newer technology, allowing the company to improve productivity and increase production capacity threefold. This new project also includes green initiatives, including the implementation of a water recirculation system to cut water wastage. Once implemented, this new equipment will put M.I.S. Electronics in a favourable position to maintain existing business and capture additional manufacturing contracts that are currently being conducted overseas. "Employing more than 800,000 workers across the province, Ontario's manufacturing sector is the economic engine of our nation," said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. "Our government is proud to support local companies like M.I.S. Electronics as they expand their operations, and we thank them for their contributions to Ontario's dynamic and growing manufacturing ecosystem." In support of this investment, Ontario is providing M.I.S. Electronics with $481,592 in funding through the Regional Development Program's Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream. "We are delighted with the strong support provided by the Ontario Government through Regional Development Program throughout the process," said Saeid Mohmedi, Chief Executive Officer, M.I.S Electronics Inc. "The AMIC program directly improves manufacturing efficiency and productivity, and this investment provides a springboard to a state-of-the-art manufacturing line that allows MIS to compete on an international stage." Through its Regional Development Program, Ontario is investing $180 million to help manufacturers across the province grow while supporting distinct regional priorities. To date, Ontario has supported more than 135 projects through the program, leveraging more than $1.9 billion in new investments and helping to create over 3,500 jobs.
Canada’s population has grown by a staggering amount in recent years, but babies have not been at the heart of the boom. Statistics Canada revealed last week that 2023 was the second year in a row that Canada’s fertility rate hit an all-time low. The nation’s total fertility rate — a figure, based on current fertility levels, to determine the number of children a woman would be expected to have throughout her reproductive life — is at 1.26, down from 1.33 in 2022. The lowest mark comes in British Columbia, where the rate plummeted to one, meaning women in that province, if the trend continues, are likely to have a single child. Replacement-level fertility is the rate needed to sustain and stabilize the population from one generation to the next. The United Nations puts it at 2.1, a benchmark Canada has not achieved since the early 1970s. Total fertility rates hit unprecedented lows elsewhere in Canada, too. Also coming in below the Canadian average were Ontario (1.22), the four Atlantic provinces — New Brunswick (1.24), P.E.I. (1.16), Newfoundland and Labrador (1.08) and Nova Scotia (1.05) — and the Yukon (1.01). Western Canadian provinces, while slightly above the national average, are also declining. As is Quebec, the province StatCan said earlier this year has done the best job of bolstering its rate via “expansion of family-related policies in the province.” Nunavut, at 2.48, is the outlier across Canada, with its rate attributed to a lower average age of mothers there, more of them having more children and historically higher fertility rates among Inuit people, which make up the bulk of the population. Statistics Canada noted that dipping below the 1.3 children per woman mark puts the nation in what’s known as the “ultra-low” or “lowest-low” club for fertility rates. It’s joined by G7 partners Italy (1.25) and Japan (1.2), along with South Korea (.72), which has the world’s lowest rate. Even China, which instituted a one-child policy in the 1980s and is now grappling with a declining population and low fertility, counts itself as a member. However, unlike China, Japan, Italy and others in the dubious club, Canada’s population is increasing. So, what are the consequences of a continued downward trajectory? #canada #children #birthrate #statscan #economics #ultralow #population #club https://lnkd.in/gVGv5Yxr
“I have been fortunate throughout my career to work for very knowledgeable, skilled and strategic visionary business leaders and although I appreciate what I have learned from each of them, Craig brings that and more to my learning. Craig has the unique combination of being a P.Eng and someone who is so commercially centred that they put the focus on the customer in every business decision made. It is refreshing to see that this uniqueness has stayed with Craig throughout his career, and it is a real asset when we discuss Canadian sales strategy. Because Craig is an efficient worker, he is able to take the words “work/life balance” from the handbook to the lives of everyone at SICK Canada. Part of our great culture is grounded in all of our ability to work hard while at work and focus on family, hobbies and/or rest in our personal time. This amongst many other things makes each of us feel Craig cares for our professional and personal well being. The skills extend into Risk Management and Accounting and Finance literacy coupled with a real understanding of pricing and profit before tax. Every decision we make with Craig’s support and/or guidance assesses the financial implications and mitigates any negative outcomes. Craig is the most courteous, professional, compassionate and strategic business leader I have ever worked with and I know I am becoming a better leader every day I get to work with him.”
