Copper(II) oxide and magnesium oxide are both ionic. The metals obviously aren't. If you rewrite this as an ionic equation, it turns out that the oxide ions are spectator ions and you are left with:

Spill Kits are one method of stocking the absorbent supplies necessary to respond to accidental releases such asoverfilling of containers, hose and pipe failures, tank breaches or any other spills that may occur on site and couldcause harm to the environment. Spill berms and drain covers are also available to stop spills entering drains or sensitiveareas.

Organisations pursuing and having achieved ISO 14001 certification demonstrate a high regard for our fragile world andhow their activities may affect it. They provide a leading example to others seeking to help preserve and improve ourenvironment.

These are old definitions which aren't used very much nowadays. The most likely place you will come across them is in organic chemistry.

Note:  The equation for this is rather complicated for this introductory page. If you are interested, you will find a similar example (ethanol to ethanoic acid) on the page dealing with writing equations for redox reactions.

Personally, I would recommend that you work it out if you need it. The argument (going on inside your head) would go like this if you wanted to know, for example, what an oxidising agent did in terms of electrons:

Appropriate storage of industrial liquids on spill containment equipment can prevent environmental damage causedby accidental releases from containers. These spillpallets and workfloors can be used in raw material storage areas, product development areas, manufacturing areas, laboratories, together with waste collection and storage areas. Accountshould also be taken of hazardous materials, such as flammable liquids, corrosives or reactive materials; these may needadditional, special precautions.

Section 4.4.7 (Emergency preparedness and response) of ISO 14001 requires: “The organisation shall establish andmaintain procedures to identify potential for and respond to accidents and emergency situations, and for preventing andmitigating the environmental impacts that may be associated with them.”

ISO 14000 comprises a set of standards developed by The International Organisation for Standards (ISO) relatingto environmental management systems. (EMS). Within these standards ISO 14001 and ISO 14004 detail particularaspects that should be present in an EMS. Companies and organisations can establish individual EMS by adapting thestandards to address issues such as spill control. This could involve putting the relevant equipment in place to respondto spills and leaks to limit damage and control, particularly to the environment.

Another way of reducing waste is to use contained absorbents such as pads and socks instead of loose granularabsorbents. In addition drum funnels can assist with collection of liquids for recycling whilst also reducing emissions toair from containers used for recycling.

If you look at the equation above, the magnesium is reducing the copper(II) ions by giving them electrons to neutralise the charge. Magnesium is a reducing agent.

Section 4.3.4 (Planning – Environmental management programmes) requires: “The organisation shall establishand maintain (a) programme(s) for achieving its objectives and targets.”

This is potentially very confusing if you try to learn both what oxidation and reduction mean in terms of electron transfer, and also learn definitions of oxidising and reducing agents in the same terms.

You would need to use an oxidising agent to remove the hydrogen from the ethanol. A commonly used oxidising agent is potassium dichromate(VI) solution acidified with dilute sulphuric acid.

Section 4.3.1 (Planning – Environmental Aspects) of ISO 14001 states: “The organisation shall establish and maintain (a)procedure(s) to identify the environmental aspects of its activities, products or services that it can control and over whichit can be expected to have an influence, in order to determine those which have or can have a significant impact on theenvironment.”

To achieve and retain certification organisations must create goals for environmental performance. Key activities inwhich an organisation can significantly improve their impact on the environment are waste minimisation and recyclingwhere the amount of solid waste destined for disposal reduction can be reduced.

All oil containers must be sufficiently bunded The bund must hold 110% of the capacity of the largest container or; 25% of the total capacity stored, whichever is the greater If a single drum is being used, a drip tray can be used which holds 25% of the capacity.

This page looks at the various definitions of oxidation and reduction (redox) in terms of the transfer of oxygen, hydrogen and electrons. It also explains the terms oxidising agent and reducing agent.

It is essential that you remember these definitions. There is a very easy way to do this. As long as you remember that you are talking about electron transfer:

ISO standards require organisations to establish and maintain a programme to manage environmental issues, provideand document training for personnel whose work may significantly effect the environment and establish procedures forprevention of and response to accidents and emergency situations where spills could have an impact.

If this is the first set of questions you have done, please read the introductory page before you start. You will need to use the BACK BUTTON on your browser to come back here afterwards.

The industry standards are the 110% and 25% rules. The 110% rule is applicable where there is only 1 container stored inside the bund, in this situation the calculation is simple, the bund needs to have a capacity of at least 110% of the primary containment volume.

A tough and durable drum drip tray ideal for standing a 205ltr drum in to catch drips and spills caused during filling or dispensing. It is also suitable for storing lead acid batteries and has 50ltr capacity.

Looking at it the other way round, the copper(II) ions are removing electrons from the magnesium to create the magnesium ions. The copper(II) ions are acting as an oxidising agent.

Ethanal can also be reduced back to ethanol again by adding hydrogen to it. A possible reducing agent is sodium tetrahydridoborate, NaBH4. Again the equation is too complicated to be worth bothering about at this point.

An oxidising agent is substance which oxidises something else. In the above example, the iron(III) oxide is the oxidising agent.

ISO 14000 standards exist to help make the development, manufacturing and supply of products and services safer, cleaner and more efficient. An international set of standards also assists companies trade with each other without theneed to interpret individual, different environmental standards.

Correct use of spill response materials by trained personnel can significantly mitigate the effect a spill or leak couldhave on the outside environment and reduce the overall disruption on site. To be able to respond effectively, spill kits orabsorbents should be positioned at designated locations such as liquid handling, usage and storage areas.
