To become an armed security guard, candidates must complete all security guard training required for an unarmed guard, and the following additional instruction:

This is a general security guard training course that introduces candidates to the rigors and duties of a security guard. It is a one-time course that offers a certificate of completion for candidates who complete it.

Your site’s individualized property evaluation report contains information and analysis that you need to properly manage your site’s security needs. That information includes detailed analysis of the crime rate in your area, site access and parking protocols, and existing security infrastructure. Interior inspection includes analysis of emergency exits, fire suppression capabilities, and alarm infrastructure for emergencies. Exterior inspection includes analysis of structural defects, property lighting, and potential vulnerabilities in building access.

Candidates must obtain a legal New York Pistol Permit and be registered as a security guard to take this course. Once the course is completed, candidates receive a certificate that they submit when applying for an upgraded armed guard registration.

This course provides real-world on-the-job instruction that introduces candidates to guard duties and responsibilities in an actual work site. Candidates are required to complete the training no more than 90 days after securing a job as a security guard.

Along with the required annual 8-hour in-service training, armed guards must complete an 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training course. It also must be competed once during each calendar year the guard maintains his two-year armed guard registration.
