For the slow motion videos, we used two Sony FS700 cameras. These relatively inexpensive professional video cameras are all the buzz right now because they can film amazing High ISO 1080 video at 240 frames per second. It's pretty cool to see this footage in such detail at these super fast frame rates. For the lenses, I wanted the video to match the still shots so we used another Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens on one camera and the Canon 70-200 2.8 lens on the second camera.

Overall the entire photoshoot and event was a huge success. I was able to photograph roughly 100 people in a single night and instantly created a unique portfolio full of taser reactions. To your second point. With the amount of creative work being generated every minute in digital age almost every idea seams unoriginal and we see connections between projects (even if there are none) on a daily basis. I remember being really impressed with the posters for Nymphomaniac so this resemblance might be bigger in my head then it really is. Nonetheless, I really like the outcome of your work (which I failed to mention in my first post) and community approach to the whole project.

Phil retired as a Detective Inspector for policing after 30 years’ service. During this time, he performed roles in Uniform and CID in the Metropolitan Police, Hertfordshire, and in West Mercia Police. After leaving the police, Phil has lectured in Den Haag and Rwanda with the Public Prosecutors, worked with the UN in Uganda, and trained staff working in the hostile territories of South Sudan.
This had to be one of the most fun photo shoots you've ever done. Very dynamic! I dunno about that girl with the short hair, though...she seemed to enjoy it just a little too much. :)
Our Degree in Professional Policing (PPD) is licenced and validated by the College of Policing, the professional body for policing in England and Wales. This is the only qualification which enables you to apply for the ‘pre-degree' (PPD) entry route into the Police Service in England and Wales and meets the professional requirements for policing in the 21st century.
The overall lighting setup was pretty simple. I used in total 3 Profoto D1 1000 Watt heads to craft the light on my subjects. The key light was fitted with a small 2.7 x 2.7 softbox with the front diffusion panel removed to increase the contrast. To help edge out my subjects from the background, I setup a larger 2' x 3' softbox behind and above my subjects. The final D1 Monoblock was placed behind my subject to the left of the camera to give an even stronger edge light from the side. In order to produce the fastest flash duration, I set my key light to full power (10) and set a correct exposure on my camera to compensate for the high amount of flash.
The BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Policing is one of three possible entry routes into policing and is a key part of the national policing agenda to professionalise the police service, recruitment into policing, widening participation and wider Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF). As such, this qualification will allow students to pursue a career in policing as an approved and licenced qualification from the College of Policing. Like many photographers, I have a ton of ideas floating around that I think would be great to explore. This idea for a photo series showing people the second they are hit with a taser or stun gun has been something I have wanted to photograph for almost a year now. Despite all the barriers it presented and the countless people who thought I was a sadist, crazy, or just outright irresponsible, I decided to finally stop talking about this idea and actually execute it. The results were pretty hilarious.

Each police force in England and Wales has its own recruitment process, selection policy and entry requirements and students who wish to apply to a police force should check their eligibility against the respective force’s own recruitment website. Police recruitment is managed by individual constabularies and involves rigorous background checks and recruitment processes that are separate to the University of Worcester’s admission policy and procedures. The University of Worcester has no influence over these external procedures and whilst admission onto this programme of study will enhance a student’s policing career prospects and provide them with the necessary licenced qualification it cannot guarantee students with a career in policing.
Students will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course and students will meet several current and former police practitioners throughout the programme. Teaching staff have significant policing and police leadership experience in key specialisms such as investigation, domestic violence and abuse, child protection, major incidents, covert policing, risk management and response policing. Staff have prior experience of policing within the University’s local community and are therefore able to utilise existing working relationships and partnership arrangements/ contacts within the delivery of the programme modules. Teaching staff also have prior experience of training operational police officers and staff and delivery and/or contribution to the development of College of Policing licenced programmes. I think we usually want to believe that someone is ripping off someone else when two ideas are similar. The Nymphomaniac posters are clearly a clever way to advertise the movie. I had no idea my series would produce the orgasmic reactions they have received until after I looked at the images (actually I could tell during the event itself). The test images mainly produced images of pain. Stylistically they are very different but the actual people do share similarities. Does anyone know if Von Trier or the photographer actually made the actors reach orgasm or were they simply acting?

Yeah I understand the differences but everyone knows the phrase Taser and it rolls off the lips better than "The Stun Gun Photoshoot". It would not be practical to shoot taser barbs into each participant.

This approach allows students to engage in experiential learning closely aligned to their levels of knowledge and experience as well as preparing them for future multi-agency and interdisciplinary police incidents with competing priorities posing ethical dilemmas. Each person was tazed by their friend or significant other which created an interesting dynamic in itself. The emotions on both sides of the taser were extremely entertaining to watch. The person getting tazed was almost always nervous and jittery with either a sense of fear or anxiety. The participants doing the tazing had a different demeanor altogether. Most of them were excited to cause pain to their friend and only showed remorse immediately after executing the shock. I wanted to record both of these reactions and you can see a second slow motion edit of both people's reactions in the video below:
Don't tase me bro! The photoshoot looked interesting and the subjects were none worse for the wear and no lasting harm was done. I can't compare the pain of a taser, since I've never been tased, to that of having 700 or so cold cranking amps surging through my wedding ring.; but I received a third degree burn while replacing a boat battery and the pliers touched positive and negative. The pliers arched through my wedding ring. Fortunately, I had the sense of mind to get it cold and jumped in the lake in mid March in South Carolina. The lake temperature was probably about 50°F. I got to see what a tendon looks like. Fortunately, everything healed up. I now have a permanent wedding band tattoo. I wish I had taken photos of the recovery process since the healing process was quite amazing seeing the skin grow back.

As I understand it, speedlights fire at full power each time but at lower power settings the circuit board stops the full power flash from completing (shortening flash duration). That's why speedlights have faster flash durations at lower power settings. Most studio strobes actually fill up a capacitor in preparation for a flash (depending on what power setting you have chosen) and they dump the capacitor completely with each flash. That's why you have to "dump" a studio strobe when you lower it's power setting.
When I envisioned this event, I knew I wanted to keep my subjects separated from the crowd and also have a clean background to film them against. Instead of messing with paper or fabric backgounds, we setup two 7'x8' Lastolite Hilite backgrounds to form a little cove. These Hilites are really useful for location shooting because they are easy to break down and can be used as HUGE softboxes if you fire lights inside of them.
Those joining the Police Service without a degree in professional policing are required to study this programme ‘in-force’ as part of a police apprenticeship programme or as an additional bolt-on Certificate if joining a police service via the ‘any relevant degree’ Degree-Holder Entry Programme. However, studying this degree at the University of Worcester prior to applying to join a police service via the ‘Pre-Degree’ route, provides students with the freedom to study this academic knowledge-based degree, based upon the national curriculum for the police constable role, whilst gaining valuable insight and experience from police practitioners and academics alike, in the comfort of University surroundings.

This degree provides you with the academic entry requirements for an application for the pre-join degree route into policing. Each police force in England and Wales sets its own recruitment process and selection criteria, with entry requirements varying between forces in addition to the degree requirement. I was just with the Profoto rep last week and he confirmed it. B1s have fast T1 times at lowest power while D1 are the opposite and have fast T1 times at full power.

Assistant Chief Constable for West Mercia Police, Richard Cooper, visited the University to welcome its first Professional Policing cohort. Several members of the police service attended to mark the occasion and speak to the students about a career in policing.
What I found most interesting about the reactions people showed while getting tazed was you never knew how they would react. Some people screamed while others were quiet. A few people looked like they were experiencing pleasure while others had the most painful faces I've ever seen. I saw jumpers and fallers. People laughed and people cursed. I even had about four guys and girls who did not react at all and seemed to be completely unphased by the 300,000 volts of electricity.

Cool video!!! It was funny to watch. The lighting, music and over all mood was serious, but their faces were hilarious! The feel is like the combination of sweet and salty. Really super cool, I watched all the videos and looked at all the pictures! And i can defiantly say that I would never let anyone touch me with a taser. Ever.
In a typical week students will have around 12-15 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on taught modules and in the final year there is normally slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.
woah bad accident man... I served in my country's artillery division as compulsory national service. the training sergeant warned us about the lead batteries by placing a spanner to short circuit the battery. He pressed a tad too hard the whole spanner's head melted and sputtered around. luckily no one got hurt.

The course provides opportunities to assess knowledge, understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments and individual assessment tutorials with Module Tutors. Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessment which is graded and counts towards the overall module grade. The assessment schedule is balanced so as not to ‘overload’ the student with submission deadlines and summative assessments designed in relation to course and module learning outcomes (constructive alignment). Module learning outcomes will be assessed in isolation within summative assessments; assessments are not designed to continually require a student to achieve learning outcomes more than once in more than one assessment. This is to add clarity and comprehension to assessment briefs for the benefit of the learners and their clear development and progression routes; throughout the programme and modules themselves within Semesters.
I wasn't thinking about that. I'm right-handed, but my left hand had better access to the battery. Two doctors, one a friend who saw me after it happened and my regular doctor who I saw the next day, told me afterwards that they thought I would lose the finger. My GP gave me instructions for cleaning and care, but after a few days, I got depressed after seeing nothing happening. I went to the nurse at work and said "Don't worry, this didn't happen here." and told her what happened and the care. She suggested adding hydrogen peroxide as part of the cleaning process; that hurt like hell, but I started seeing results. I knew that my finger would be intact.

In addition, meetings with Personal Academic Tutors are scheduled on at least four occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course. Students are also able to access tutorials with the module team and final year dissertation supervision. The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip them for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement. A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support from Student Services and Library Services, and the Personal Academic Tutoring system enables students to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help them to flourish and be successful.
After graduating with her LLB, Michelle joined the West Mercia Police Service and during a 17-year career in policing, served in a variety of roles, achieving the rank of Detective Sergeant. Michelle’s policing experience was predominantly dedicated to the investigation of serious and interfamilial crime within specialist CID units, with Michelle specialising in domestic violence and abuse investigations. In the latter years of her service, Michelle co-ordinated and led the training and development of all newly recruited detectives across both West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police.
Reflecting the national police eligibility criteria, all students must hold a Level 2 qualification at GCSE grade C/4 or above in both English Language and Mathematics (in keeping with police force entry requirements).
Please note, the BA (Hons) Degree in Professional Policing does not guarantee entry into employment as a police constable or any police staff position. It is tailored towards developing the skills, knowledge, understanding, experience and personal confidence students will need to apply for any of the posts offered by a police service. It will also prepare students for other roles in the increasingly pluralised environment of policing in the UK.
This is a really interesting thought. I have always questioned a musician's credibility when their song sounds exactly like a popular song. How could they ripped another artist off? But in this case, I have never heard of this Nymphomaniac movie until yesterday and yet the concept is pretty similar. I think it just goes to show how unoriginal most ideas are AND how easy it is to correlate two events that actually have nothing to do with each other. These images are so awesome for the theme of that movie though. Maybe I'll watch it this weekend.

Phil is current doing a Masters by Research where he is researching police legitimacy, focusing on those working within and alongside the criminal justice system. He is also writing about the plight of those awaiting outcomes of police investigations from the standpoint of a defendant.
Teaching is research led; the National Police Curriculum is developed and augmented by staff who have researched and written extensively on many areas of policing, from the history of policing and police leadership, multi-agency partnerships, public order and the hidden aspects of police corruption and deviance. Teaching will relate to real-world examples and ‘lived experiences’, whether in relation to police practice, the behaviour of individuals or the specifics of legislation, policy, procedures and strategies and implementation of such into practice. The teaching team will draw on relevant research, analysis and evaluation, use current literature such as Serious Case Reviews, government and policing reports, world news and social media publications and wider media sources, such as documentaries and podcasts, to consider and introduce alternative views, perspectives and evidence within the examination of policing and the wide, diverse and far-ranging societies and communities it serves. Teaching aims to encourage and support students to take responsibility for their own learning, to become increasingly independent and autonomous in their academic and professional development. This approach further seeks to foster an understanding and adoption of a lifelong approach to learning, firmly embedded in professional practice. I explain the entire setup in the Behind the Scenes video below but I'll outline it here as well. For the camera, I decided to shoot with the new Nikon D810 DSLR. It has 36mp which allowed me to shoot a little less tight and still retain a high amount of resolution if I needed to crop. Having people jumping around in the frame can make it difficult to compose the perfect shot so I often shot a little wider to give me some flexibility. The lens used was the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 because it gives a nice compression to the portraits.
While interesting my only problem is that this using a Taser its a Stungun. A Taser is a gun like device that fires 2 darts on a wire from a distance into the subject. Its nastier and more effective by the fact you have a set of darts embedded in your skin raising the conductive potential of the the charge.

We would strongly advice that students become familiar with the recruitment requirements and eligibility criteria for the police force to which they intend to apply to (those students wishing to become a police officer). Students should be aware of this separate employment criteria and note that entry requirements into a career in policing are subject to individual constabulary police recruitment processes, which includes vetting checks, application sift, assessment centre, final interview, medical and fitness. The degree programme will not be suitable for candidates whose sole ambition is to become a police officer, but for certain factors, will not be able to meet the eligibility criteria (e.g a conviction for certain criminal offences). Police forces also require a minimum education level of a level 2 qualification in English Language & Mathematics at a GCSE grade C or above, or grades 4-9.
If these are traditional flashes, then yes. If these are IGBT units, the opposite is true. I'm not familiar with these lights. I would like to get myself a set of IGBT lights, they're really handy when doing fashion work where a model is always moving about, although sometimes you want the longer duration of traditional units when you want a little motion blur in hair and clothing.
