Brilliant white clouds against a deep blue sky or richly colored fall hues are no coincidence. B+W polarizing filters, known as polarizing filters for short, enhance the purity of inherent colors and increase color saturation. Polarizing filters are among the most important filters in analog and digital photography.

B+W polarizing filters are circular polarizing filters that take into account the different measuring systems of cameras. This is the case with almost all modern cameras when beam splitters are involved in the TTL exposure meter or autofocus beam path. This prevents incorrect exposures. The extension factor is up to 3 f-stops. With the B+W Käsemann High Transmission Polarizing Filter approx. 2-3, this corresponds to +1 to +1.5 f-stops.

Maximum effect is achieved in landscape photography with a shooting angle of 90° to the sun. For a uniform effect in the picture, the focal length should not be less than 35 or 28 mm in 35 mm format because of the uneven polarization of the sky light. In general, reflections can be completely suppressed in the ideal case with the help of a correctly oriented polarizing filter. The ideal case here means that the illumination and recording angles are approximately the same and correspond to the angle of maximum polarization, usually 30° to 40°.

Since the B+W Basic CPL Polarizing Filter MRC 82mm can be rotated in the mount, the erasing effect in the viewfinder or on the display can be adjusted noticeably. Another effect of the B+W polarizing filters is the reduction of reflections on non-metallic surfaces such as water, shop windows, paint. Objects behind them, even lettering behind reflective paint, become recognizable again - a fascinating image enhancement without image processing!
