Campus policing is thought to have its origins with Yale University’s 1894 decision to hire two officers for patrolling the campus at night to establish a campus security function. Until the 1960s and 70s, the growth of campus security remained a watchman-type function. With the prevalence of campus unrest during the turbulent years of civil rights and anti-Vietnam war protests, campus leaders came to believe that relying on outside agencies to deal with campus disturbances was inadequate from a political and operational standpoint.

Some trip hazards don't need to be removed, but they can be fixed. For example, a pothole in a walkway can be fixed by resurfacing or filling the hole. Or a frayed carpet edge can be replaced.

For example, you can't dispose of a trailing cable if you need to be able to plug in the equipment you are using. But you can re-route the cable so that it doesn't cross a walkway.

For campuses with a full complement of sworn officers, the duties include anything a municipal agency would do. In addition to patrolling and responding to calls for service, there may be specialty units such as detectives and tactical teams. Community policing concepts are especially important in campus policing due to the unique demographics of a college campus. Young people deserve extra guidance from campus officials including campus law enforcement.
