Taser for MI CPL Holders As of August, 2012, Michigan CPL Holders can purchase, possess and use a “Taser” ie.: Conductive Electrical Weapon (CEW), as an ancillary weapon for non-lethal defense to compliment the deadly force option of a firearm. Not surprisingly, many of our CPL students chose to complete our CPL class and then the subsequent Taser course to legally purchase, possess and use a Taser, when using a firearm for defense (for a variety of reasons) may not be an option for them. Yet, with the long-standing success of Taser use by Law Enforcement, they are secure in their personal defense plan, in which they feel no other superior option would have been available to them to protect against physical or lethal force! “MCL750.224a(7)(a) requires that the device contain an identification and tracking system…. Therefore, devices that do not dispense this material are not lawful to possess (e.g., stun guns, stun batons, stun canes, stun flashlights).” MSP Legal Update, August 13, 2012. To the best of our knowledge, we are the only commercial range in Michigan that regularly offers this Orientation Seminar with a former three-time certified law enforcement Taser Instructor for civilians. The first hour of the seminar covers the use, effects and risks associated with the CEW, including a written test. Legal applications are discussed with numerous handouts for student reference.  .
