I think you only have two options. 1) Use the Symbol feature which you already know or 2) use the key combination of Alt+0248 (numeric keys).

We recently started using Arial in AutoCAD. When typing "%%C" in text, the symbol is Ø. In our previous font it was the smaller version, ø, which is available in Arial.
