Il fenomeno della diffrazione del suono ci fa capire sostanzialmente una cosa: che a parità di dimensioni dell'ostacolo che incontrano, i suoni con basse frequenze (maggior lunghezza d'onda), cioè quelli più gravi, sono in grado di aggirare più facilmente gli ostacoli. Non solo. Se la barriera presenta dei bordi con spigoli vivi, questi diveneteranno essi stessi delle sorgenti. Viceversa i suoni più acuti, cioè quelli con alte frequenze (minor lughezza d'onda), troveranno una barriera, creando al di la dell'ostacolo stesso una zona d'ombra, cioè una zona priva di suono. Se vogliamo trasferire nella pratica quanto detto, se un giorno dovessimo costruire un muro tra noi ed una sorgente per ostacolarne l'onda sonora, lo costruiremo senza dubbio più alto se si tratta di un suono grave, più basso se acuto.

La diffrazione acustica è un aspetto progetttuale dell'isolamento acustico che si pone soprattutto per la realizzazione di barriere acustiche antirumore, come ad esempio quelle poste su linee autostradali o ferroviarie, le fonti sonore del rumore. Difatti i progettisti, oltre a considerare le caratteristiche di assorbimento acustico e di potere fonoisolante di una barriera, prestano particolare attenzione allo studio degli effetti della propagazione del suono dovuti alla diffrazione acustica e ai corretti accorgimenti da prendere. Un esempio è quello che vede coinvolto uno dei nostri prodotti a catalogo, lo Stratocell Whisper, che viene applicato a mo' di cappuccio fonoassorbente con una forma arrotondata, sia per assorbire l'onda sonora e sia per evitare l'effetto "spigolo" delle barriere (foto a lato).
In generale, la diffrazione è quel fenomeno per il quale quando un'onda incontra un ostacolo o una fenditura, tende a rompersi e ricomporsi, sparpagliandosi al di là dell'ostacolo stesso. Dato che il suono è di fatto un'onda, anche questo è soggetto al fenomeno della diffrazione. Che si verifica quando avvengono delle precise condizioni: 1) Un onda sonora passa attraverso una fenditura senza modificare il proprio fronte d'onda, se la dimensione della fenditura è maggiore della lunghezza dell'onda sonora. 2) Se una fenditura è più stretta e minore della lunghezza dell'onda sonora, il fronte d'onda si deforma diventando sferico e generando onde sonore più piccole. 3) Un'onda sonora è in grado di aggirare un ostacolo se le dimensioni di questo sono minori della sua lunghezza dell'onda.
