Now that the swimming season has come around again and the amenities of splashing in cold water may be comfortably contemplated and enjoyed, it is pleasant and even refreshing to partake of Metro's "Dangerous When Wet," a sort of musical aqua-comedy with Esther Williams, which arrived at the Music Hall yesterday. For this frolicsome item not only dumps you quite often in the drink, but also gives you some rather pleasant company to clown around with while on dry ground.In addition to the handsome Miss Williams, who is an English Channel swimmer for the nonce and a beautiful lot of dame to look at, either ashore or afloat, there's a Gallicized Fernando Lamas, upon whose caresses she trains and there's also a jovial Jack Carson, who plays the clumsy manager of the dame. There's Charlotte Greenwood as her mother, William Demarest as her pop and Denise Darcel as a buoyant Frenchie with something more than Channel swimming on her mind. In the background is Barbara Whiting as a 'teen-age sister who sings, not to mention a few other visions of loveliness and aplomb.With all these nice people assembled, with a Dorothy Kingsley script and a musical score of tuneful merit by Johnny Mercer and Arthur Schwartz, Director Charles Walters has fetched forth a happy and ingratiating film that probably won't break any records but may while away a lot of summer hours.Outstanding sequences in it are a Tom and Jerry cartoon in which a superimposed Miss Williams has an underwater adventure with the animal friends and the climactic sequence recounting Miss Williams' Channel swim. This is one form of athletic endeavor we'd never assume to have much kick, but dogged if the Metro people haven't whipped it up into quite a breathless thing.In one other sequence, Miss Greenwood does an amusing dance to one of the picture's better numbers, a little something called "Ain't Nature Grand." And now and again, Mr. Carson gets off a funny line.As we say, there is nothing very special or spectacular about "Dangerous When Wet," but it comes as relaxing entertainment at this torpid time of the year.On the stage at the Music Hall is "A Summer Medley," a variety revue featuring Jay Lawrence, the Tom Parris Trio. Mildred Ellor. Ronald Rogers and the Music Hall Glee Club, Corps de Ballet and Rockettes.
