None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

·      Accuracy: As mentioned previously, TASER® devices deploy one opportunity to make contact with your target and then must be reloaded to use again. Practicing is crucial to ensure that you are accurate with your TASER® model of choice when you need it in an emergency.

·      Easy to Maintain: Stun guns are basically batteries on steroids. This means that as long as you recharge your stun gun monthly by simply plugging it into a power source, your self-defense weapon is always ready to defend. Many of the models come with a lifetime warranty if you register your purchase.

·      Range: The biggest consideration when purchasing a stun gun is distance. A stun gun must come in contact with the attacker. This means that you must be within arm’s reach of your assailant. If we can be blunt, you must consider what you are purchasing your stun gun to defend yourself from. If you are seeking protection for a domestic violence scenario, your attacker will most likely be in your personal space. If you are seeking to protect yourself from a dog, you probably want pepper spray instead of a stun gun. If you are seeking non-lethal home security,  one of the TASER® energy weapons is a great option.

Although both defensive weapons have similarities, they also have huge differences. It’s vital to assess your personal situation to find the model that fits your lifestyle. In summary, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

Never quit: This is probably the most important lesson I’ve learned from the military. I will die before giving up. You will be surprised what you can endure or achieve when you push yourself through the limits of failure both mentally and physically.

·      Style & Features: If you are looking for a “non-gun, gun”- then a TASER® Pulse is the self-defense option for you! However, because TASER® is one brand and stun guns are an entire self-defense category, there are many, many more options available when selecting a stun gun versus a TASER® energy weapon.

Recently we were just hired by Grant Cardone to provide security for him during the grand opening of Cardone Ventures in the city of Scottsdale. I didn’t know who he was when I got a phone call from his business partner, he recommend that I google Grant to find out. After doing some research prior to the security detail and then getting to meet him directly. I was very pleased to confirm that he’s a very real and down to earth person. Grant can motivate and lead people to success in life that they never could have imagined. Even though I’m sure we will be doing work together again in the future. It would be great to buy him breakfast and thank him for being such an inspiration to others.

Stun guns and TASER® devices are two of the most effective self-defense options to protect yourself. However, because of their similarities, they are often confused for one another. When purchasing a self-defense product, it’s important to know the difference between a stun gun and a TASER® energy weapon so that your personal defense weapon fits your lifestyle and meets your expectations.

·      Weight: TASER® energy weapons weigh more than traditional stun guns. This is something to consider when you think of how you will carry it. Will it be in your purse? Will it be on your body in a holster?

We are blessed that some very prominent leaders read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them :-)

One of my greatest setbacks was when I first joined the military. When I arrived at Fort Benning, Georgia for in processing, I failed a portion of the medical screening because of an issue with my hearing. I was removed from my company and placed in medical hold over. After spending a few weeks in the barracks on medical hold, it seemed like my military career was over before it even started. I was tired of wearing a uniform that I couldn’t earn, and my motivation was low. I made a promise to myself that I would be the best if given the opportunity. Eventually after several doctor visits and multiple hearing evaluations I was cleared for duty. I would then go on to become the soldier of the cycle and was recognized as the distinguished honor graduate, number one out of 250 soldiers for basic training/infantry school.

I was born in Norwich, Connecticut and relocated to Arizona with my mom and sister when my parents divorced in 1993 when I was seven years old. Starting over in Arizona was very difficult for the first several years as my mom struggled to make ends meet. Looking back however, I am very fortunate to have had some unfortunate life experiences that helped to shape me in my adult life. Overall, I had a basic childhood with a love for playing baseball and spending every second of my free time in the outdoors hiking and exploring.

First and foremost, TASER® is a brand of less-lethal self-defense weapons owned by a company called Axon. Similar to Kleenex® (facial tissue) or Velcro® (hook and loop attachments), the brand name is so well known that the entire grouping of stun guns and all electric voltage self-defense gear has come to be used interchangeably by the public. TASER® energy weapons not the same as stun guns.

For as long as I can remember serving in the military had always been a dream of mine going back to early childhood. In early 2006 that dream became a reality when I enlisted in the United States Army with an MOS of 11bp or airborne infantry. I attended basic training at the home of the infantry, Fort Benning, Georgia where I would go on to become the distinguished honor graduate. Upon completion of airborne school and officially becoming a paratrooper I was given orders to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where I was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, 2 battalion 508th parachute infantry regiment 4th brigade combat team. Without much time to get comfortable upon arrival at Charlie Company I would deploy to Afghanistan on a 15-month combat tour. During our deployment we would go on to conduct combat patrols and air assault missions all throughout Southeastern Afghanistan. Charlie Company was my home until I was honorably discharged in 2009. After the military, I went to school to become a paramedic because I wanted to pursue a career in public safety. However, when faced with the economic challenges of the recession. I decided to become a high threat security specialist and team medic, providing security for the U.S. government in Afghanistan from 2011–2015. In all, I have over four and a half years of operational experience in Afghanistan and have celebrated six birthdays there. In total, I have 15 years of experience in the security industry including high threat protection in hostile environments, critical infrastructure, and executive protection.

Personal courage: Face fear or danger. I feel that personal courage has really helped me in business. I’m not afraid to fail and when I do I learn and make the best out of my failure. Personal courage has also given me the strength to tackle what seems like an impossible task, like starting a business in an extremely competitive industry. I have experience situations where chances of success were slim but failure was not an option. My partners and I started something with nothing with our company and went up against global conglomerates, but we had the courage to do so.

Besides the military, I owe my current success to my mentor and business partner Jerry Schwalbach. Without Jerry, Windom Security would never exist. I started out in his driveway providing security on his estate while between jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the time I didn’t even have the money to buy a sport coat that fit me for the job. He laughed at me the first day that I showed up. Jerry and I built a relationship over time and he saw something in me and gave me the opportunity to start my own business. In 2016, Jerry gave Windom Security its first loan of private capital to get started.

In-depth Interviews with Authorities in Business, Pop Culture, Wellness, Social Impact, and Tech. We use interviews to draw out stories that are both empowering and actionable.

My military career holds a lot of interesting stories and experiences. Joining the military was the best decision that I’ve ever made. Money can’t buy the life experiences that I have gained during my military career. One that sticks out the most taught me to appreciate the little things in life and to always expect the unexpected. During my deployment to Afghanistan, my platoon was assigned to Firebase Bruin. Over the course of several months, we would live without warm meals, running water, and showers. Our days were long and consisted of two guard shifts, several hours of filling sandbags, a foot patrol of the surrounding villages, and shit burning detail. All our hard work paid off after several months at Bruin when we were given orders to burn it down. We were reassigned to FOB Waza Khwa located in Paktika Province more than 30 hours away by vehicle. We traveled by Humvee and would hit several IED’s and face multiple ambushes. During one ambush my Humvee was directly in the kill zone, and I was sitting on top with a 240-machine gun. We had been traveling by then for 20 plus hours and my 240 had been exposed to a large amount of dirt and debris. When I returned fire, my 240 failed and at that point, I had never felt so helpless and vulnerable in my life. From that moment on, I always plan for the unexpected and assume the worst on just about everything that I’m involved in.

We are interested in fleshing out what a hero is. Did you experience or hear about a story of heroism, during your military experience? Can you share that story with us? Feel free to be as elaborate as you’d like. Based on that story, how would you define what a “hero” is? Can you explain?

Unfortunately, most of the real heroes are not alive to tell their stories. The story of Christopher “MoonDog” Moon is the only one that I have regarding heroes. It’s a story about a kid that gave up a contract to play for the Atlanta Braves to serve his country, only to give his life at the age of 20. Moon was a scout sniper assigned to Charlie Company and while on his final patrol stepped on an IED, suffering serious wounds including multiple amputations. Moon succumbed to his injuries several days later after being transported to Germany. There is a great article by The Atlantic called “The Last Patrol”, it’s a must read (https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/11/the-last-patrol/308266/). For Moon’s sacrifice there is a memorial statue in his honor located at Cherry Field in Tucson where he used to play (https://indiancountrytoday.com/news/ex-mlb-prospect-chose-army-over-baseball).

In this interview series, we are exploring the subject of dealing with crisis and how to adapt and overcome. The context of this series is the physical and financial fallout that resulted from the COVID 19 pandemic. Crisis management is one characteristic that many successful leaders share in common, and in many cases it is the most important trait necessary to survive and thrive in today’s complex market.

Right now, I’m trying to create a young professional movement in the City of Scottsdale in Ariz. that understands the importance of civic engagement and giving back to your community. Everyone has a voice, and that voice can impact the community for the greater good. I feel that generations these days have lost the sense of community and what makes America great. Our communities are failing to engage these generations and it’s greatly affecting what our communities will look like for future generations. I am a millennial living in a city thats future is being decided by a small population that is well into their golden years.

Being properly prepared for a crisis starts long before a crisis strikes. Business owners and leaders should be familiar with conducting a risk assessment and mitigation, understand the crisis management process, and how to develop a business continuity plan — that way they are reducing the known risks that can lead to a crisis through prevention and preparation while also having a plan in place that outlines how their business will operate during a crisis, allowing the business to continue to deliver their products or services without disruption or at acceptable levels.

Did you have a time in your life where you had one of your greatest setbacks, but you bounced back from it stronger than ever? Can you share that story with us?

Ok, thank you for all that. Now let’s shift to the main focus of this interview. We would like to explore and flesh out how to survive and thrive in crisis. How would you define a crisis?

I had the pleasure of interviewing Chad Arruda of Windom Security Strategies Today. Windom Security Strategies Today was formed from the merger of two prominent Arizona security companies. Alexis Security Group was a Veteran Owned armed and unarmed Arizona licensed security guard agency created by former military, law enforcement, and military defense contractors. Security Strategies Today was an Arizona licensed investigation agency focused consulting and risk management firm created by former federal intelligence, law enforcement, and joint terrorism task force personnel. The perfect combination of intelligent strategies with effective guard capabilities.

Absolutely, I owe everything that I’ve achieved in life so far to the military. From business itself to business and community leadership. In the Army, we learn to live by the seven core values and apply them every day in everything that we do. The ones that I apply the most are:

If I had to break down my military experience into 5 steps that someone can take to survive and thrive in these situations, my steps taken would be focused on mental preparation and toughness. From my perspective, if you lack the ability to be able to mentally prepare for stressful situations and the mental toughness to push through these situations you’re setting yourself up for failure in any aspect of life.

President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln successfully led our country through some of our darkest times. He got us through the American Civil War, preserved the Union, and abolished slavery. Keeping a positive attitude is one of the greatest traits of survival — if you have a negative attitude you’re doomed from the start. Having the mental toughness and the will to overpower the desire to give up when things are overwhelming is part of keeping a positive attitude. Being able to quickly adapt to challenges and find solutions is key to surviving in any crisis or environment. President Lincoln had all these characteristics and traits and became one of our country’s greatest leaders during the midst of a crisis.

A TASER® energy weapon is actually very different from a stun gun in its’ capabilities, features and price. The most obvious difference between them is that a TASER® device discharges two metal barbs from a cartridge that are attached to the weapon by copper wires which transmit the high voltage electrical current.

·       Easy to Conceal and Carry: As a general rule, stun guns are relatively light and small compared to other self-defense options, such as a firearm. This makes their portability a big bonus.

The first thing that people should do during a crisis is to assess the situation and identify the risks, dangers, or threats that one maybe facing. The next step after the risks have been identified is to triage the most pressing issues and develop a response to how one will handle them.

I am the co-founder of Windom Security Strategies Today. We are a Phoenix-based security guard agency that provides armed and unarmed guard services. I am proud that Windom Security is a company that was founded by veterans for veterans. Our commitment to our country, community, and the philosophy of continuing to serve has always been the driving force behind what we do. Our mentality is what makes us unique — we truly care about creating a safer way of life for our citizens within the community. Windom Security has challenged the status quo in an industry that is oversaturated with companies that sell the illusion of security and are nothing more than staffing agencies. Rather than waiting for issues to happen and reacting to them inefficiently we provide a service based on prevention and resolving issues before they even happen, which is what real security is all about. The days of the typical observe and report security are a thing of the past, especially today with the shortage of law enforcement officers in major cities across the U.S.

There are opportunities to make the best of every situation and it’s usually based on how you frame it. In your opinion or experience, what’s the first thing people should do when they first realize they are in a crisis situation? What should they do next?

Ok. We are nearly done. You are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

While TASER® devices discharge two projectiles 15-25 feet that are attached by copper wires to the unit, stun guns operate in a very different manner. Stun guns are handheld electrical self-defense weapons too, but they use actual contact with the handheld unit to send their electric amperage into your attacker. This is done by means of 2-6 (depending on the model) conduit prongs on the front of the unit that generate electrical current between them when you press the button.

·      Ease of Use: Unlike traditional stun guns which are immediately ready to use over and over by simply recharging them in any power source, TASER® self-defense weapons require high compression cartridges that contain the copper wires and projectile barbs in order to operate.

·      Range: TASER® models deploy electrified barbs a distance of 15 feet minimum and up to 25 feet in some device models. Distance is very important in self-defense because you want to keep as much distance between you and your attacker as possible. With that being said, accuracy is an absolute must if you choose this form of self-protection. Missing your target means missing your opportunity to escape because TASER® devices require cartridges (the copper wires and barbs) to be inserted into the handset for use. Once you have used your cartridge, you will need to load another before it can be used again.

Can you share the most interesting story that you experienced during your military career? What “take away” did you learn from that story?

·      Reliability: The brand name you know and trust for self-defense is TASER®. There’s a reason for this. Axon Enterprises, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries manufactures TASER®, the most reliable electric and non-lethal self-defense products on the market. Their products are trusted by police forces across the United States.

·      Resources: Training is readily available through TASER® Academy. Unlike stun guns, the parent company of TASER® brand, Axon, has an extensive library of free and paid training options. In fact, some states require TASER® training certification before you can own one. As laws are always changing, we suggest that you contact your local police department to inquire on the laws in your area.

·      Price & Warranty: As a general rule, TASER® devices are more expensive than stun guns. TASER® less-lethal self-defense products are serious self-defense weapons and the quality is very similar to a well-built firearm. Just non-lethal. Axon Enterprises, Inc.  stands behind their TASER® brand and offers one of the best warranties in the business.

Selfless service: Putting my employees and community first by serving something larger than myself without thought of recognition or personal gain.

·      Options Galore: There is a stun gun model to fit any lifestyle. We carry stun guns for runners, stun guns for home security, keychain stun guns and even stun guns that look like pen lights. Many of our stun guns come with multiple features so you are not getting just a stun device but also a flashlight and/or panic alarm feature too. Options are nice and should be considered when selecting your self-defense weapon.

A crisis to me can be defined as an event or period that will lead to intense difficulty, trouble, or danger and will require difficult or import decision to be made.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we dig in, our readers would love to get to know you a bit. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood “backstory”?

Defense Divas® is here to answer any questions you have while choosing the best self-defense weapon for your lifestyle. With over 15 years in business and certified self-defense instructors on staff, we can provide you with expert answers to your self-defense product questions.

Here is the main question of our discussion. Crises not only have the potential to jeopardize and infiltrate your work, but they also threaten your emotional stability and relationships. Based on your military experience, what are 5 steps that someone can take to survive and thrive in these situations? Please share a story or an example for each.

·      Legality: While pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, some require you to apply for a permit in order to carry a stun gun. Check your local laws before purchasing.
