They feature a flexible seal that ensures a sealed fit around the full perimeter of the face. Full-face respirators have an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 50, and may be constructed of silicone, thermoplastic, or rubber materials to allow repeated cleaning, disinfection, storage, and reuse.

Strap harnesses or ratchet suspensions ensure a secure fit to the wearer’s head and are typically constructed of a durable, flexible material such as polyester, elastic, nylon, or rubber. Straps and harnesses should be tightened or loosened with the respirator in place.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires fit testing prior to first-time use, and on a consistent annual basis thereafter. Wearers should always inspect the respirator before each use to determine whether or not the respirator is complete and undamaged and to verify that the sealing material properly adheres to the face.
