If you know which road you are on, it is pretty simple to distinguish the signs and understand what they mean. Remember, on signs like these, you are always traveling on the road (black line) that starts at the bottom of the sign.

Intersection road sign

A crossroad sign alerts you to a four-way intersection ahead; another road crosses the one you are on. You should prepare to slow down, be alert of crossing and turning vehicles, and yield as necessary.

Roundabouts are a circular intersection where drivers travel counterclockwise around a center island. You will not face traffic signals or stop signs in a modern roundabout. Before you enter, you must yield to traffic already in the roundabout.

When you see a T-intersection sign, the road you are on ends ahead. You must slow down and be ready to yield to traffic on the intersecting roadway. Sometimes, a Stop sign controls the intesection from your direction.

Intersection sign math

The Y-intersection is a similar kind of three-way intersection. Typically, three roads meet at an angle, and you must turn left or right.

When you see a side road sign, another road enters from the side or at an angle. You should watch for traffic entering your road from that direction and vehicles that may turn into the side road. Ease off the gas, if necessary.

I have been driving for 60 years and I follow all the signs = Some are very confusing, but if I see one I don’t understand, I slow down until I get passed it. Yes some of the signs are not explicit and I do the best I can to get through them with caution

Intersectionsignsmeaning

The driver who reaches an uncontrolled intersection first goes first. If you arrive at the same time as another driver, the driver on the left yield to the driver on the right.

For some strange reason, the California Driver Handbook insists on calling the side road sign (B) for T-intersection, which can be confusing. The T-intersection sign looks like a ‘T.’

This is invaluable information and helps me to not make quick decisions, but study the question very carefully. Having visited in 50 plus countries in my career as a Foreign Correspondent and Missionary, I do get a bit confused on rules and laws for driving and traffic, so left the driving to others.
