Line Pair GaugeThanks Mr. Lopez for your quick response. The figure of gauge does NOT have clear instruction label which numerical scale is LP/mm and it placed on the middle so it’s created confusion and could be any of the two numerical scale. From your explanation I could understand the right numerical scale is LP/mm. Based on your explanation I could imagine if able to see 5 Individual Peaks in line profile (say at red line position) then my resolution is 3.5 lp/mm. Still not clear what is the purpose of left numerical scale and if their conversion from left to right. Most of the searched found documents lacks in clear practical instruction about its use and might assumed that they user already know how to use it. You are almost on the right track. A simple left-side to right-side horizontal line is not correct. The numbers on the right just tell the user what the horizontal increments on the left side are. For example, if your magnification system allows you to resolve as fine as the 17th increment down, then you would have 16 line-pairs per millimeter resolution. Thanks again Rick for clarification. My previous understanding was wrong. So its as you said "numbers on the right are horizontal increments value on the left side are". So need to get horizontal increment position from left scale (lowest position of line signal profile where still can see five distinct individual peaks) and corresponding numerical value (as per right scale) is LP/MM. So right is scale is just aiding to display the left increment value and you can still gauge LP/MM just using the left scale only. When I correlate left increment position to right number only one number still remain odd is number 11. I could not match with it any left horizontal increment. Correct me if I am wrong again. How about when you are in middle or somewhere between two horizontal increment? Assuming just visual interpolation of value. Thanks. Hi, nicely figured out how to read the scale of the converning line pair gauge correctly! But how to measure image unsharpness or basic spatial resolution with this tpye of gauge? The only usefully parameter I found which could be meaured by this type of gauge is the pixel size of the digital image. Exactly for this measurement is was designed in the printing industry about 50 years ago! But this need a correct procedure how to convert the visible line pair resolution in LP/mm into pixel size of mm. So a pixel size of 100 micron corresponds to a maximum of 5 LP/mm. For unsharpness measurements and basic spatial resolution in digital images I recommend ASTM E 2002 or ISO 19232-5 Duplex wire IQIs and the evalustion procedures given in these standards.
