In the studio I use sheer curtains that are hanging above the windows. Other equipment would be diffusion panels or a cheap trick is also using rolls of thin tracing paper and sticking it to the window. It gives a wonderful soft light.

Once you have your room darkness set to your liking, then pick a subject and setup your light. I do portrait photography a lot, so I have a mannequin as a subject when I practice. Next, shoot -> adjust -> shoot -> adjust & repeat. Online tutorials are great, but nothing replaces practice!
