According to the Marquette NWS, on July 4, 1995, divers recovered the Fitzgerald’s bell from the bottom of Lake Superior, replacing it with a replica engraved with the names of the crew. In a ceremony at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point on Nov. 10, 1995, the bell was presented to the relatives of the crew and rung 30 times: once for each crew member and a final time in honor of all those who have lost their lives at sea.

On Nov. 9, the Edmund Fitzgerald embarked on her ill-fated voyage from Superior, Wisconsin, near Duluth, en route to a steel mill near Detroit, Edmund Fitzgerald joined a second taconite freighter, SS Arthur M. Anderson. By the next day, the two ships were caught in a severe storm on Lake Superior.

The study reexamined the weather conditions at the time and showed that the worst conditions coincided with the time and location at which the Fitzgerald was lost. Mesoscale modeling in the study showed sustained winds near storm force (48 knots, or 55 mph) and significant waves of more than 25 feet. Reports indicate that wind gusts reached 86 mph, with waves as high as 35 feet.

The ship’s last recorded radio transmission was around 7 p.m. on Nov. 10, 1975, when Captain McSorley said, “We are holding our own.” The ship disappeared from radar on the Arthur M. Anderson, which was in radio contact with the Fitzgerald, and was never seen again.

According to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, in the hours leading up to the ship’s demise, Fitzgerald’s captain, Ernest McSorley, reported that the ship had a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a list.

It is presumed that the ship sank abruptly since there was no distress call, and some of the lifeboats found were badly damaged, indicating they weren’t launched but rather smashed along the ship and broke loose. The Coast Guard’s final report suggests the Fitzgerald nosedived into a large wave, lost buoyancy, and plunged to the bottom of Lake Superior in seconds.
On Nov. 10, 49 years ago, the Edmund Fitzgerald and her 29 souls saw the last light of day as they traversed Lake Superior.
Today, ceremonies are still held at the Great Lakes Shipwrecks Museum in Whitefish Point. The in-person ceremony is closed to the public, with the memorial service primarily intended for the families of those lost on the Fitzgerald.
In a paper analyzing the weather conditions, authors Thomas Hultquist, Michael Dutter and David Schwab noted a gale warning was issued for Lake Superior at 7 p.m., Nov. 9. The storm continued to intensify as it traveled over Marquette, Michigan, and over Lake Superior, with a central pressure dropping to 978 millibars. A storm warning was issued on the morning of Nov. 10.
According to the Manistee News Advocate story on the 48th anniversary, folk rock artist Gordon Lightfoot, known for his 1970 hit “If You Could Read My Mind,” recorded “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and No. 1 in Canada.
According to the Marquette National Weather Service, on Nov. 14, 1975, a U.S. Navy plane with a special magnetic anomaly detector located a strong contact about 17 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. During the next three days, the Coast Guard cutter Woodrush located two large pieces of wreckage in the same area under about 535 feet of water. A Navy underwater recovery vehicle photographed the wreckage on May 20, 1976, clearly showing the words “Edmund Fitzgerald” on the stern piece of the sunken ship.
