Being a person with poor eyesight, I obtained this application from the jump start. Whether it be the micro print on drug bottles, which is what I got it for, to objects hard to see. I also like the fact of being able to take a picture of what I am viewing. I also like it that I can zoom the light manually and automatically as well. Coupled with the mentioned functions, there is a insightful group of visual enhancement functions such as shake reduction. So, you can tell I am a fan and I show it off every chance to others with poor eyesight but cannot afford an appointment with the eye doctor as well as the almost sure prescriptions for lenses that they say cannot be made to fit your frames. I am not saying to not see your eye doctor but what I am saying is the app can postpone that painful purchase of reading glasses and hopefully postpone a full prescription. A real winner.

The Sony trend appears going smaller chip/pixel cmos direction. The latest IMX278 is a 13 mag - pixel chip at only 1/3 with 1.12 um pixel. Is there scope that can work with such chip?

So, it seems like a monochrome version of the IMX178 would be unique in that it would have the Starvis designation and a rolling shutter and be marketed as a surveillance camera.

Someone on another forum said that they had the spec sheet for the mono version of the IMX178, but that source said that Sony has NOT introduced this sensor as yet, perhaps the announcement will come sometime this month.

Sometimes it's harder to make uniform mono sensor. Then doing Bayer pattern may ease hiding that problem. That could be true for old sensors but nowadays production quantity dictate prices. If it's really mass made sensor then it will be relatively cheap. Low quantity sensor will be more expensive.

I'm beginning to wonder whether the ASI178MM is just the color IXM178 that has had its Bayer filter removed by third-parties. If that is true then these cameras should probably be marketed as modified sensors, not as a new product that has come directly from Sony.

I can find no reference to a monochrome version of IXM178 on the Sony.net websites. Thus, has this version of the sensor actually been released or even documented by Sony?

Yes, the only monochrome surveillance camera that is listed in that table is the IMX136LLJ (2.8um pixels and 1944H × 1224V).

I purchased one of the ZWO ASI178MM-Cool cameras today at OPT in California, so the cameras are now available in the U.S.

At least for some time bigger pixels will be in their offer as very small pixels aren't needed/are bad for surveillance and other low light conditions. There is also GPixel or CMOSIS that have some bigger pixels. e2v has few mass market CMOS sensors, but all of those companies doesn't seems to be interested in aggressive development of such mass market sensors.

I used the free version for six months plus. Using the pro features w/o ads for two weeks at a time, so easily over and over again, gave me the opportunity to realize the benefits of this pro version app. Watching six thirty second or less videos, (sometimes just 8 seconds) every two weeks to lose in-app advertising pop-ups and have full usage of the pro features (3-for adds 3 for features) was really great.Yes I probably could continue to do this forever but for two bucks and to say thanks for giving me a real opportunity to use a great app without being burdened by free version limitations, is well worth it. Thank you! I have never given five stars in an initial review, holding off for coffee, updates, unrealized performance issues compatibilitiesor and other related (over-all) user interface (I think of what tasks can I do with the app, or the obvious benefit of using this app and what is a hinderance to this-what does using this app take away from how I use other apps and device features). I evolve and regress each day causing a ever changing reasoning, which in this case along with the bias of regular personal circumstances resulting in immediate positive results, I see no reason to wait, and no reason they have not earned FIVE stars right now. GOOD JOB AND THANK YOU

I truly love your App! My eyesight has been declining since I turned 40. I’ve had expensive prescription glasses several times since then and I have either lost them or my prescription wasn’t working properly any longer. So unfortunately since the prescription glasses have been out of my price range for the last couple years. I’ve had to settle for off the rack pharmacy glasses. Which aren’t really that great and in return I’m pretty sure they’ve made my eyesight worse. So anyways to the point. Your MagnifyGlass App has been a real lifesaver for me since it allows me to zoom in and out on all the important fine print on pretty much everything these days. It’s also really great that your App utilizes my cell phones bright light on the opposite side of the screen. I also love that it has the capability to take a picture of whatever I’m looking at and it goes straight into my phone’s photo gallery so I can look back at it for reference if I need to. I’ve told numerous friends and family members and even strangers to download your MagnifyGlass App. Thanks again for providing all of us with your Free App. From: A Big Fan Craig Carter
