Many variations have been witnessed in the standards for the actual length of an inch in the past. However, it has been defined as 25.4mm and based on the metric system since the international yard was adopted during the 1950s and 1960s. The word “inch” has been derived from the Roman uncia “twelfth”.

Figure 1. Circularly polarized light changes the direction of its polarization as it moves. Similarly, taking φx − φy = − π.

To convert mm to inches, divide the length in millimetres by 25.4. For example, to convert 100 millimetres to inches, divide 100 by 25.4 to get approximately 3.94 inches. This conversion factor accounts for one inch being equal to 25.4 millimetres. Repeat this process for other lengths to accurately convert them from mm to inches.
